SyLvIA Ann HEWLEtt is an economist and the founding President of the Center for Work-Life Policy,
a non-profit think tank where she chairs the “Hidden Brain Drain,” a task force of 70 global companies
committed to global talent innovation. She also directs the Gender and Policy Program at the School of
International and Public Affairs, Columbia University. Dr. Hewlett is a member of the Council on Foreign
Relations and the World Economic Forum Council on Women’s Empowerment. She is the author of 10
Harvard Business Review articles and 11 critically acclaimed nonfiction books including Off-Ramps and
On-Ramps and Winning the War for Talent in Emerging Markets (Harvard Business Press, 2011). Her writings
have appeared in the New York Times, the Financial Times, Foreign Affairs, and the International Herald Tribune,
and she is a featured blogger on Harvard Business Online and Forbes. In 2011 she received the Isabel
Benham Award from the Women’s Bond Club and Woman of the Year Award from the Financial Women’s
Association. She is a frequent guest on television, appearing on Oprah, Newshour with Jim Lehrer, Charlie
Rose, the Today Show and Wall Street Journal Report with Maria Bartiromo. Hewlett has taught at Cambridge,
Columbia and Princeton universities. A Kennedy Scholar and graduate of Cambridge University, she earned
her PhD in economics at London University.
RIPA RASHId, Executive Vice President at the Center for Work-Life Policy, has worked across Europe, the
Americas, and Asia-Pacific, and held senior diversity roles at Booz Allen Hamilton and MetLife. Prior to her
focus on talent management, Rashid spent over 10 years as a management consultant at Booz Allen Hamilton,
PricewaterhouseCoopers, and Mitchell Madison Group, where she served global clients in media and
financial services. She is the coauthor with Sylvia Ann Hewlett of “The Battle for Female Talent in Emerging
Markets” (Harvard Business Review), a series of BRIC country reports, and Winning the War for Talent in
Emerging Markets (Harvard Business Press). Rashid has been featured by Fox News, Bloomberg, Newsweek,
South China Morning Post, and China Radio International. She holds an AB cum laude in astronomy and
astrophysics from Harvard University, an MA in anthropology from New York University, and an MBA from
INSEAD.

AnnE ERnI is Head of Leadership, Learning and Diversity at Bloomberg LP. Her responsibilities include
talent management initiatives such as succession planning, executive coaching and professional development
programs. Prior to joining Bloomberg, she was the Chief Diversity Officer at Lehman Brothers whose global
responsibilities included the recruiting, retention and advancement of women and under-represented groups.
She led the development of cutting-edge strategies for workforce, marketplace and supplier diversity and
the work-life integration agenda including the award-winning Encore program. Erni has more than 15 years
of front line experience having spent 10 years on the trading floor in both fixed income and prime brokerage
sales and five years in corporate banking. Prior to joining Lehman she worked for Bankers Trust and Swiss
Bank Corporation. She holds a BA from The Johns Hopkins University and an MBA degree in international
relations and economics from The John Hopkins School of Advanced and International Studies.
CAtHERInE FREdMAn is Managing Editor at the Center for Work-Life Policy. She collaborated on Winning
the War for Talent in Emerging Markets: Why Women Are the Solution and Top Talent: Keeping Performance
Up When Business Is Down, as well as contributing to numerous CWLP research reports, articles and blogs.
She has coauthored five best-selling business books, including Direct from Dell with Michael Dell, Only
the Paranoid Survive with Andy Grove, and Use the News with Maria Bartiromo, and has written memoirs
with Andy Grove (Swimming Across) and for the Dell family. She is an award-winning magazine editor for
consumer and corporate publications. Fredman is a graduate of Bryn Mawr College.
