PROPOSAL
To approve the contract with the County of San Bernardino in the amount of $600,000 for Chaffey College
Economic Development to provide training in computer/office skills, retail occupations, phlebotomy, and
general automotive technician training for the 2008–2009 fiscal year.
BACKGROUND
The Workforce Preparation Program is designed to bridge the gap between the employer’s need for trained
labor and the participant’s need for employment at livable wages with opportunity for career ladder
advancement. The college has worked closely with the County of San Bernardino CalWORKs program for
the last several years to develop intensive, short-term vocational education programs to meet local business
and industry needs. Curriculum includes technical skills, work ethics, critical thinking, problem solving, and
life skills training. Most of the trainings also include placement in an internship or externship for hands-on
application. Supportive services address barriers to ensure student success. Job placement services are
provided as well as a job coach to assist students with successful transition into the workforce.
BUDGET IMPLICATIONS
Funding Source – The county’s Transitional Assistance Department has been allocated funds by the
CalWORKs single allocation to provide vocational education and training services. This is a fee-for-service
contract.
Status of Funds – Funds for this contract will be included in the 2008–2009 restricted general fund budget.
Future Implications – None
