4 Concept Development (Feasibility Study)<br />

Concept Development of <strong>SSG</strong>(X) follows Concept Exploration. In Concept Development the general concepts<br />

for the hull, systems, and arrangements are developed. These general concepts are refined into specific systems and<br />

subsystems that meet the ORD requirements. <strong>Design</strong> risk is reduced by this analysis and parametrics used in<br />

Concept Exploration are validated.<br />

4.1 Hull Form<br />

4.1.1 Envelope Hull<br />

Section 3.1.1 describes the hullform alternatives. Table 36 provides a summary of the optimization results and<br />

the baseline characteristics of the <strong>SSG</strong>(X). The overall diameter of the envelope hull is 31 feet; the length is 257.3<br />

feet, giving a length to diameter ratio of 8.3. The beam was adjusted to 31 feet so that the beam to diameter ratio is<br />

The MIT teardrop hullform model was used to generate offsets for the outer hull; these hand calculations are<br />

shown in Figure 39. The length of the forebody is 74.4 ft; the length of the parallel midbody is 71.3 ft; the length of<br />

the aft body is 111.6 ft. Figure 37 - Figure 39 show the calculations of the hullform offsets, volume and surface<br />

area.<br />
