12. Bene�ts and <strong>Service</strong>s<br />
Bene�ts and services to volunteers may include training and other learning opportunities, support from GSGATL sta� and other<br />
volunteers in the position, <strong>Girl</strong> <strong>Scout</strong>s <strong>of</strong> the USA and GSGATL publications and Web site, tools for recording volunteer experiences,<br />
awards and recognitions, and performance evaluations. Volunteers who are registered members <strong>of</strong> GSUSA are covered by<br />
supplemental accident insurance.<br />
12A. Policy:<br />
Volunteers recognize their <strong>Girl</strong> <strong>Scout</strong> position(s) as a voluntary service and do not expect, receive, or solicit any monetary<br />
reimbursement for service.<br />
12A. Procedure:<br />
Volunteers are encouraged to keep a record <strong>of</strong> expenses incurred while doing <strong>Girl</strong> <strong>Scout</strong> activities (e.g., cost <strong>of</strong> uniforms, mileage,<br />
etc.). Many <strong>of</strong> these expenses can be applied as income tax deductions. Volunteers are advised to check with the Internal Revenue<br />
<strong>Service</strong> or a tax consultant.<br />
All registered members <strong>of</strong> <strong>Girl</strong> <strong>Scout</strong>s are covered under the basic coverage <strong>of</strong> the <strong>Girl</strong> <strong>Scout</strong>s supplemental Activity Accident<br />
Insurance. The plan provides coverage for medical expenses due to accidents for members traveling to and from and participating in<br />
approved, supervised <strong>Girl</strong> <strong>Scout</strong> activities. The organization does not assume responsibility for insuring a volunteer’s personal e�ects.<br />
According to the Nonpro�t Risk Management Center, the federal Volunteer Protection Act <strong>of</strong> 1997 protects<br />
volunteers acting in the scope <strong>of</strong> their responsibilities as de�ned in the position description.<br />
Under Georgia law, directors and o�cers <strong>of</strong> nonpro�ts enjoy limited protection from liability, as do an<br />
organization’s volunteers. A member, director, trustee or o�cer who serves without compensation for a<br />
non-pro�t hospital or association or a charitable organization is immune from civil liability for an act <strong>of</strong> or<br />
omission done in service if they were acting in good faith and within the scope <strong>of</strong> their duties, with the<br />
exception being damage or injury caused by willful or wanton misconduct.<br />
A charitable institution is not liable for the negligence <strong>of</strong> its o�cers and employees, unless the institution<br />
fails to exercise ordinary care in the selection or retention <strong>of</strong> competent o�cers and employees, or where<br />
the plainti� is a paying recipient <strong>of</strong> services from the organization<br />
13. Financial Assistance for Travel and Training<br />
National GSGATL delegates elected by GSGATL may be provided all or part <strong>of</strong> travel, room, and per diem expenses entailed in<br />
attending the National Council Session.<br />
Scholarship and travel assistance may be available to help adults defray the cost <strong>of</strong> attendance at all <strong>Girl</strong> <strong>Scout</strong> training courses or<br />
special events held outside GSGATL jurisdiction.<br />
13A. Policy:<br />
An adult receiving �nancial assistance for training from GSGATL must have been a registered member for at least one year and must<br />
have working knowledge <strong>of</strong> <strong>Girl</strong> <strong>Scout</strong> program and policies. The recipient must submit a written report upon return from the event<br />
and share experiences with <strong>Girl</strong> <strong>Scout</strong> troops or groups.<br />
14. Training<br />

Training is provided and required for appointment to most positions.<br />
Every adult volunteer shall be selected on the basis <strong>of</strong> interest, ability to perform the assignment and agreement to participate in<br />
training as required.<br />
14A. Policy:<br />
All appointed volunteers will receive an orientation to <strong>Girl</strong> <strong>Scout</strong>ing and any required training as stated on the position description.<br />
All volunteers must complete training within the timeframes established on the position description. Failure to complete training<br />
shall be a basis for release or a cause for not being reappointed to a position.<br />
24 Volunteer Essentials
