Giant collections
This mental attitude was indeed worthy of the United
States emerging as a superpower, aiming at gathering
the wealth of the world in its hands. And no better place
than New York, the heart of the country, could serve as a
repository for all these treasures! Ancient Egypt’s priceless
artefacts came first. In 1907, the Departments of Egyptian
Art and of Decorative Arts were completed. Thereafter, the
treasures originating to a large part from Ottoman territories,
Iraq, Syria, Upper Mesopotamia, followed by those
from Azerbaijan and Iran joined the museum.
From Leonardo da Vinci to Picasso
Civilizations of the whole world are like parading throughout
the galleries of the museum, presenting their utmost
interesting and outstanding samples. Met’s twenty-five
hundred European paintings comprise one of the greatest
such collections in the world, from the Early and High
Renaissance art periods up to the contemporary period,
Raphael, Tintoretto, Titian, Giotto, Botticelli, Giovanni
Goya, Delacroix, Monet, Manet, Gauguin, Seurat, Van Gogh,
Matisse and Picasso.
of art and countless artefacts from numerous old civilizations,
thus presenting 6 thousand years of history within
the broadest spectrum of human achievement is a perfect
