Fuel Efficiency Becomes a Key Sell<strong>in</strong>g Element<br />

Prices at the pump averaged around $1.93 per gallon across the U.S. <strong>in</strong> the<br />

summer of 2004. By the summer of 2006, self-serve gas was typically sell<strong>in</strong>g at $2.95<br />

per gallon (see figure 3). Analysts project prices to rema<strong>in</strong> at more than $2.50 per gallon.<br />

The skyrocket<strong>in</strong>g price of gasol<strong>in</strong>e has many drivers reconsider<strong>in</strong>g the <strong>vehicle</strong>s<br />

they are will<strong>in</strong>g to drive. M<strong>in</strong>ivans, pickups, and SUVs are quickly los<strong>in</strong>g share to<br />

smaller and more fuel-efficient <strong>vehicle</strong>s. In spite of high gasol<strong>in</strong>e prices, the sales of the<br />

larger <strong>vehicle</strong>s rema<strong>in</strong>ed steady right up to 2005. However, <strong>in</strong> 2006 there was a sharp<br />

decl<strong>in</strong>e <strong>in</strong> sales, while the sales of the smaller <strong>vehicle</strong>s cont<strong>in</strong>ued to rise (table 11).<br />
