2.6.4 Team Fate – UC Davis Hybrid Electric Vehicle Group<br />
UC Davis is one of the seventeen teams who will re-eng<strong>in</strong>eer a Chevrolet<br />
Equ<strong>in</strong>ox SUV to m<strong>in</strong>imize energy consumption, emissions, and greenhouse gases while<br />
ma<strong>in</strong>ta<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g or exceed<strong>in</strong>g the <strong>vehicle</strong>'s utility and performance (see Appendices C, D and<br />
E).<br />
Cont<strong>in</strong>uously Variable Transmission (CVT) power tra<strong>in</strong> system<br />
1) Charge-susta<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g HEV (CSHEV) system uses gasol<strong>in</strong>e to charge the batteries<br />
which means the energy efficiency is poorer than if the batteries are charged by<br />
the <strong>electric</strong> grid.<br />
2) The eng<strong>in</strong>e produces too much power most of the time unless the eng<strong>in</strong>e is about<br />
one-fourth the size. Thus to construct a Charge-depletion HEV (CDHEV) power<br />
tra<strong>in</strong>, the eng<strong>in</strong>e needs to be about a quarter of the displacement of a conventional<br />
eng<strong>in</strong>e with about ¼ the power.<br />
3) The runn<strong>in</strong>g cost of CDHEV <strong>vehicle</strong>s is between 1/3 to perhaps as low as 1/8 the<br />
cost of pure gasol<strong>in</strong>e or diesel cars because of the cost of <strong>electric</strong>ity and the<br />
<strong>in</strong>centives.<br />
