It is seen that the prices for alternative fuels <strong>in</strong> terms of energy-equivalent are<br />

higher than their cost per gallon because of their lower energy content per gallon.<br />

However, consumer <strong>in</strong>terest <strong>in</strong>creases as the price differential per gallon <strong>in</strong>creases, even<br />

if that differential does not translate to sav<strong>in</strong>gs on an energy-equivalent basis.<br />

Outsourc<strong>in</strong>g of Component Manufactur<strong>in</strong>g / Shar<strong>in</strong>g of Parts and Designs<br />

The return on the billions of dollars <strong>in</strong>vested by the Big Three <strong>in</strong> acquir<strong>in</strong>g foreign<br />

carmakers may be found <strong>in</strong> the <strong>in</strong>creas<strong>in</strong>g amounts saved by the outsourc<strong>in</strong>g of design<br />

and eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g to overseas offices along with the shar<strong>in</strong>g of component designs across a<br />

wide range of models. A grow<strong>in</strong>g manufactur<strong>in</strong>g trend is for American carmakers to<br />

gather design work and components from foreign plants and manufacture or assemble<br />

<strong>vehicle</strong>s domestically. Achiev<strong>in</strong>g the ―American look‖, which may <strong>in</strong>clude significant<br />

changes <strong>in</strong> bodywork and <strong>in</strong>teriors, is of major importance to car sales <strong>in</strong> the U.S.<br />

Attempts to market the same car, identical <strong>in</strong> every detail, across global markets have<br />

resulted <strong>in</strong> dismal failures.
