Research<br />
The department is involved in a lot of different research projects with<br />
particular interest in non radioactive stable isotopes <strong>and</strong> currently a<br />
whole series of insulin clamp protocols using isotopes are being used<br />
to examine novel insulin analogues. We are fortunate that only two<br />
units in the world are being given these analogues to do detailed<br />
metabolic studies <strong>and</strong> we are one of those. Research income over the<br />
last two years has been approximately £800,000 worth of grants <strong>and</strong><br />
in the recent national university Research Assessment Exercise the<br />
department was rated as five star <strong>and</strong> on a par with the best units in<br />
the United Kingdom.<br />
