Ashford hospital provides rehabilitation services, out-patients, “cold”<br />
surgery <strong>and</strong> planned investigations. Some services for the local population<br />
are also provided at community hospitals in Woking, Weybridge <strong>and</strong><br />
Walton.<br />
<strong>Endocrinology</strong> <strong>and</strong> <strong>Diabetes</strong><br />
A full range of services diabetes <strong>and</strong> endocrinology services are provided.<br />
<strong>Diabetes</strong> <strong>and</strong> endocrinology out-patient clinics are held at both sites. The<br />
registrar clinics are predominantly at St Peter’s with an alternate week<br />
clinic at Ashford Hospital.<br />
The department is well supported by both in-patient <strong>and</strong> out-patient<br />
diabetes specialist nurses <strong>and</strong> diabetes dietician. There is availability for<br />
continuous glucose monitoring at both sites.<br />
There is a dedicated diabetes podiatrist <strong>and</strong> excellent liaison with the<br />
vascular surgeons. There are specific clinics for young adults with diabetes,<br />
joint renal-diabetic clinic run with Dr Marsh (consultant nephrologist),<br />
endocrine/diabetes ante-natal clinic run jointly with Dr Newbold,<br />
(consultant obstetrician) <strong>and</strong> a transition clinic for adolescents run jointly<br />
with Dr Bahl (consultant paediatrician).<br />
Also within the trust there are paediatric clinics for diabetes <strong>and</strong><br />
endocrinology <strong>and</strong> retinopathy clinics <strong>and</strong> the consultants are happy for the<br />
endocrinology SpR to attend for training purposes.<br />
There are weekly general endocrine clinics with an after clinic discussion<br />
meeting <strong>and</strong> dedicated weekly thyroid/parathyroid clinics with monthly<br />
joint medical-surgical clinic with Mr Thomas, endocrine surgeon. Excellent<br />
radiology support is provided with on site MRI, ultrasound guided fineneedle<br />
aspirations <strong>and</strong> nuclear medicine scanning.<br />
Post graduate study<br />
There are weekly gr<strong>and</strong> round <strong>and</strong> hot topic meetings in the post graduate<br />
education centre plus monthly educational half days.<br />
The post graduate education centre library provides a comprehensive range<br />
of both print <strong>and</strong> electronic knowledge <strong>and</strong> learning resources, excellent IT<br />
facilities, <strong>and</strong> a comfortable <strong>and</strong> well equipped learning environment which<br />
is accessible 24 hours a day.<br />
A range of alerting services <strong>and</strong> fast <strong>and</strong> efficient document supply<br />
complements the inquiry <strong>and</strong> information service. There is time for an<br />
academic half day <strong>and</strong> the time of this is arranged to suit the needs of<br />
individual registrars.<br />
