The trainee is expected to plan his or her specific specialist training needs<br />

in advance of commencing the post. Currently these include<br />

paediatric/adolescent diabetes, Joint diabetes antenatal clinics, diabetes<br />

podiatry service, dedicated lipid clinic <strong>and</strong> endocrine dynamic investigations<br />

service. A diabetic renal clinic is planned, which the registrar is expected to<br />

attend. Furthermore, retinal screening service offers additional experience<br />

<strong>and</strong> the trainee will have opportunity to gain experience in this area.<br />

Academic activities: St Richards has an active postgraduate department<br />

with weekly meetings at which the trainee is expected to participate <strong>and</strong><br />

contribute regularly. There is ample opportunity to get involved in teaching<br />

<strong>and</strong> audit. The trainee will attend the regional specialty teaching sessions<br />

regularly <strong>and</strong> clinical commitments will be cancelled to enable this.<br />

Depending on the trainee’s needs <strong>and</strong> the stage of training, dedicated<br />

research/academic session can be built in to the job plan.<br />

The post is recognised for higher training by the Royal College of Physicians.<br />

Teaching is an integral part of this post with protected teaching sessions<br />

from 1.00 pm to 5.00 pm on Wednesday afternoon. There are also regular<br />

lunchtime departmental meetings including those in the diabetes centre.<br />

There is a regular monthly regional specialist registrar training programme,<br />

which the appointee will be expected to attend.Facilities are given for study<br />

leave in accordance with the regulations.<br />
