The Firm<br />
This appointment is that of Specialist Registrar to Dr K Laji (Lead Clinician)<br />
<strong>and</strong> Dr D Bosman, Consultant Physicians with a special interest in<br />
<strong>Diabetes</strong> <strong>and</strong> <strong>Endocrinology</strong>. The medical team consists of two<br />
Consultants, one Specialist Registrar, one Senior House Officer <strong>and</strong> one<br />
Pre-Registration House Officer (F1 Trainee). <strong>Diabetes</strong> multidisciplinary<br />
team consists of a nurse consultant, four specialist nurses, two dieticians,<br />
three podiatrists <strong>and</strong> other support staff. There are usually one or two<br />
medical students attached to the firm.<br />
Duties of the post<br />
The post offers excellent opportunities for gaining experience in all aspects<br />
of diabetes <strong>and</strong> endocrinology. Particular areas<br />
where you could plan your training programme are<br />
adolescent <strong>and</strong> antenatal diabetes, diabetic renal<br />
disease, foot, ophthalmology along with<br />
opportunity to gain h<strong>and</strong>s on experience in<br />
endocrine dynamic function testing.<br />
General Medicine: Duties are at St Richard’s<br />
Hospital <strong>and</strong> include management of acute<br />
medical admissions, the day-to-day care of the<br />
general medical <strong>and</strong> diabetic patients on the<br />
wards. The acute medical, medicine for the elderly<br />
<strong>and</strong> rheumatology services are fully integrated,<br />
with all specialties taking part in the acute general<br />
medical rota. The on-call commitment is one in<br />
eight, with an internal cover system for both annual <strong>and</strong> study leave. The<br />
registrar is expected to supervise both the senior <strong>and</strong> pre-registration house<br />
officers.<br />
In addition the new post holder will be expected to share equally in the<br />
hospital medical rota.<br />
<strong>Diabetes</strong> <strong>and</strong> <strong>Endocrinology</strong>: Three<br />
fixed out-patient clinics per week -<br />
general medicine, diabetes <strong>and</strong><br />
endocrinology (see timetable below).<br />
At each of these sessions, the<br />
appointee will manage own list of<br />
unselected new <strong>and</strong> follow up<br />
patients, <strong>and</strong> will work under<br />
supervision of the consultant<br />
physicians. Liaison with the<br />
multidisciplinary team at the<br />
<strong>Diabetes</strong> Centre is part of daily<br />
working pattern.<br />
