The Firm
This appointment is that of Specialist Registrar to Dr K Laji (Lead Clinician)
and Dr D Bosman, Consultant Physicians with a special interest in
Diabetes and Endocrinology. The medical team consists of two
Consultants, one Specialist Registrar, one Senior House Officer and one
Pre-Registration House Officer (F1 Trainee). Diabetes multidisciplinary
team consists of a nurse consultant, four specialist nurses, two dieticians,
three podiatrists and other support staff. There are usually one or two
medical students attached to the firm.
Duties of the post
The post offers excellent opportunities for gaining experience in all aspects
of diabetes and endocrinology. Particular areas
where you could plan your training programme are
adolescent and antenatal diabetes, diabetic renal
disease, foot, ophthalmology along with
opportunity to gain hands on experience in
endocrine dynamic function testing.
General Medicine: Duties are at St Richard’s
Hospital and include management of acute
medical admissions, the day-to-day care of the
general medical and diabetic patients on the
wards. The acute medical, medicine for the elderly
and rheumatology services are fully integrated,
with all specialties taking part in the acute general
medical rota. The on-call commitment is one in
eight, with an internal cover system for both annual and study leave. The
registrar is expected to supervise both the senior and pre-registration house
officers.
In addition the new post holder will be expected to share equally in the
hospital medical rota.
Diabetes and Endocrinology: Three
fixed out-patient clinics per week -
general medicine, diabetes and
endocrinology (see timetable below).
At each of these sessions, the
appointee will manage own list of
unselected new and follow up
patients, and will work under
supervision of the consultant
physicians. Liaison with the
multidisciplinary team at the
Diabetes Centre is part of daily
working pattern.
