Endocrinology and Diabetes The service is lead by Dr Emma Bingham and Dr Jennifer Tringham with the support of one SPR (second post being applied for), one SHO and one F1. We run a 13 bedded ward (which is being developed into a diabetic/endocrine ward) and usually have a total of around 20 general medical inpatients. We run general diabetes and endocrine clinics, but there is also opportunity to attend a busy joint medical/obstetric, thyroid cancer, diabetic foot, lipid, transition/teenage diabetic and ophthalmic clinics on an occasional basis. We admit endocrine patients for investigation and there is opportunity to attend the clinical investigation unit at RSCH. There are weekly endocrine clinic meetings and joint biochemistry endocrine meetings every 3 months to discuss complex patients. We encourage attendance at regional endocrine meetings run at Kings and St Thomas’ every 3 months. Weekly diabetes team meetings include education and audit projects. There are 2 WTE hospital based DSNs and 1.4 WTE community based. The DSNs are piloting an education programme for Type 1 patients based on DAFNE and the community team are in the process of setting up XPERT education programme for those with Type 2 diabetes. We have a dynamic dietetic and podiatry service. Teaching We have close links with Southampton medical school and the Endocrine firm have a final year student attached with occasional St Georges students. The SPR and SHO take part in teaching and assessing the students and our students will also shadow our F1. Postgraduate facilities We are fortunate to have a modern, state of the art postgraduate centre with good IT resources. There is a doctor only dining room incorporated which provides a friendly and sociable environment. Frimley is well known as a busy, but very pleasant place to work and many of our juniors re-apply for further posts here. 60
Summary FPH is a great post for a year 1 or 2 SPR because it provides busy acute medical training plus the opportunity of attending some specialist clinics in a friendly and supportive environment situated close to London.
