The department of endocrinology <strong>and</strong> diabetes is a dedicated unit, The<br />

Thomas Addison Unit. It consists of 12 outpatient rooms, a 3 bedded<br />

podiatry unit, the endocrine investigation unit <strong>and</strong> offices. All aspects<br />

of diabetic care including diabetic nurse specialists, dieticians,<br />

podiatry <strong>and</strong> endocrine nurse specialists are accommodated within<br />

the department.<br />

<strong>Diabetes</strong> Services<br />

The Thomas Addison Unit currently has around 5,000 active cases on<br />

its lists. In common with all Hospital<br />

<strong>Diabetes</strong> Service, the majority of its<br />

work is outpatient activity, although<br />

the team also has access to general<br />

medical beds for management of<br />

diabetic complications, particularly<br />

acute diabetic foot management,<br />

provides a referral service for<br />

inpatient care of patients with<br />

diabetes admitted under other<br />

specialties. In addition to new<br />

patient, follow-up, nurse screening<br />

<strong>and</strong> annual review clinics, the Department also provides joint diabetes<br />
