Hurstwood Park Neurological Centre is a secondary <strong>and</strong> tertiary<br />

referral centre for both neurosurgery <strong>and</strong> neurology including a<br />

purpose built ITU/HDU.<br />

The Radiology department offers a full range of services including CT,<br />

MRI nuclear medicine <strong>and</strong> bone densitrometry. Limited interventional<br />

radiology such as inferior petrosal sinus sampling is available through<br />

the neuroimaging department.<br />

Chemical pathology, haematology <strong>and</strong> microbiology are available on<br />

site.<br />

A new state of the art Post Graduate Medical Centre (PGMC) has<br />

recently opened offering facilities for multimedia presentation. The<br />

PGMC includes a library which can be accessed 24 hours a day.<br />

Electronic access is available for many journals not held in the library.<br />

Recreational facilities include a social club <strong>and</strong> 18 metre indoor<br />

heated swimming pool.<br />

Parking facilities at the PRH are excellent <strong>and</strong> a shuttle bus runs<br />

between PRH <strong>and</strong> the Royal Sussex County Hospital (RSCH) sites<br />

hourly.<br />

General Medicine<br />

There are 130 medical beds including a 6 bedded CCU, a high<br />

dependency respiratory bay offering non-invasive ventilation <strong>and</strong> a 24<br />

bedded stroke unit. A fully equipped six bedded ITU/HDU is run by<br />

intensivists with input from the admitting medical teams.<br />

The medical team is divided into 4 firms. Each firm comprises 2<br />

consultants, 2 specialist registrars (full shift pattern), an SHO (full<br />

shift pattern) <strong>and</strong> a pre-registration HO (no overnight duties since<br />

inception of hospital at night scheme).<br />

<strong>Endocrinology</strong> <strong>and</strong> <strong>Diabetes</strong><br />

<strong>Endocrinology</strong> <strong>and</strong> diabetes services are provided by Dr Trevor<br />

Wheatley <strong>and</strong> Dr Andy Smith in conjunction with the 2 specialist<br />

registrars (see timetables below). In addition to timetabled general<br />

diabetes <strong>and</strong> endocrine clinics SpRs are encouraged to attend<br />

specialty clinics which include, joint pituitary, metabolic bone disease,<br />

diabetes foot, medical obstetric, young adult <strong>and</strong> insulin pump clinics.<br />

There are close liaisons with the neurosurgical team at the adjacent<br />

Hurstwood Park Hospital. Patients undergoing hypophysectomy (30-<br />

40 per annum) or other neurosurgical procedures likely to interfere<br />
