oil revivers finally polymerize so completely that they're nearly
impossible to remove without damaging the finish they were
meant to restore, tempting the dutiful polisher to add another
coat, which makes the mess worse. A good portion of my
yearly work involves formulating solvents to remove linseed
oil polishes, so I strongly advise against their use. Waxes are
my favorite final coating for finish restoration. They are easy
to apply and easy to touch up if damaged.
Follow-up:
Re a weathered look ror cedar (FWW #38, p. 30). Here's
a method that works well and is less caustic than lye. Mix
about 1 to 1� tablespoons of ferrous sulfate (a lawn fertilizer
available at most nurseries) in a gallon of water and wash the
wood with this solution. Expose the wood to sunlight until
the desired color is achieved. As I recall, it takes days, not

. . . Paint the wood with a strong solution of tea and let the
wood dry. Make a solution of ferrous ammonium sulfate
(available from a chemical supply company), about one teaspoon
per cup of water, and apply it to the wood. The darkness
of the gray can be changed by repeated applications, or
by changing the strengths of the solutions.
