Books Sam Maloof: Woodworker by Sam Maloof. Kodansha International Ltd.; distributed through Harper & Row, Publishers, Inc., 10 E. 53rd St., New York, N. Y. 10022, 1983. $49.95, hardcover; 224 pp . Along with building furniture these past 35 years, Sam Maloof has been telling his clients and workshop students about his forthcoming book. It would be a compendium of his work, his talk, his life-and now done, it is all of that. In addition, it is magnificently made, as much the fine work of photographer Jonathan Pollock and the people at Kodansha as of Maloof. The book is one of those happy collaborations of various crafts, lush with color and duo tone black-andwhite photographs: sensuous full-page details amid illuminating layouts comparing years of refmement. Maloofs drawings, both working plans and scrap-paper sketches, show the strength of his graphic arts background. A number of photo essays depict this whiz of the bandsaw, router and rasp at work. And there are pictures of the awesome house he continues to build himself. Maloof speaks throughout, lacing his explanations with anecdote, on everything from his childhood and his start as a woodworker, to how he applies finish. It's a generous effort to tell all, though it's true to Maloofs ingenuousness: "My approach to solving many sttuctural and design problems," he says, for instance, "is to rely on my common sense and experience." Maloof is a model for our era's self-taught craftspeople. He began work in a single-car garage and he continues himself to make every piece he sells. Using only the machines and tools familiar to any home-shop woodworker, he has mastered the making of serviceable, srylish furniture, and he has gained international recognition. If Maloof is one of your inspirations, know that his book is out. -Rick Mastelli The Strom Toys by Janet A. Strombeck and Richard H. Strombeck, illustrated by Marlene Ekman. Rexstrom Company, Inc.; distributed through Sterling Publishing Co., Two Park Ave, New York, N. Y. 10016, 1983. $9.95, paperback; 96 pp. There's an interesting idea behind this book: It's an illustrated children's story about how some IS-in. high, elfin Stroms (whose name means "stream" in their language) brought the author a line of toy designs in thanks for helping them defeat their enemy, the Slug Hog. Here comes the gimmick: The book has photos of 40 of the toys, but contains plans for only 12 of them. The other 2S plans can be ordered from the authors, at prices ranging from $2 to $12 each. So what we really have here is a catalog, a sampler, and a book for children to page through, looking at cute drawings, and lusting for more toys. Well, why not? After my initial feeling of having been taken, I imagined a family where all this would work: kids all reading, grandpa out working in the shop, everyone enjoying wholesome wooden toys. The toys themselves are average to better in looks, depending as much on careful painting as on woodworking skills. -Jim Cummins Blizzard's Wonderful Wooden Toys by Richard Blizzard. British Broadcasting Corporation, 35 Marylebone High St., London W1M 4AA, England, 1983. £6.95, hardcover; 224 pp . This book was published by the BBC to accompany a television series. The plans are carefully drawn and very clear, although some of these toys are complicated. The book starts 20 with a simple sand pit and ends with a Silver Cloud Rolls Royce-no project for the hasty-minded. In berween are trailer trucks and Land Rovers, dollhouses, rocking horses, spaceships, forts, stoves and a lot more. The text is brisk, and consists of pointers and good advice rather than tedious how-to. Measurements are in metric, with inches in parentheses. Instead of following most of these plans exactly, I'd use them as a springboard for some designs of my own. -Jim Cummins The Piano Makers by David Anderson. Random House, Inc., 400 Hahn Rd., Westminster, Md. 2115 7, 1982. $10.95, hardcover; 56 pp . Concert grand pianos are the behemoths of the music world. Each one is 9 ft. long, weighs half a ton and contains over 12,000 parts-a fascinating insttument, even if not one a weekend woodworker would want to tackle. Anderson's book, aimed at young readers (over age 10, I'd guess), gives a good idea of what goes into making one of these monsters. He follows a grand piano through Steinway's New York factory, from the woodlot to the shipping room. Although he compresses a year's work involving about 400 people into just over 50 pages of photographs and text, the level of detail seems just right for his audience. I learned a lot, too, and I'm not so young anymore. -Roger Holmes Japanese Joinery: A Handbook fOr Joiners and Carpenters by Yasuo Nakahara. Hartley & Marks, PO Box 147, Point Roberts, Wash. 98281, 1983. $1l.95, paperback; 239 pp. Over the centuries, Japanese carpenters have developed an astonishing variety of ways to stick pieces of wood together to make buildings. Over one hundred of them are illustrated here, and very good illustrations they are. I spent several hours absorbed in figuring out how the various joints fit together, though some interesting stuff defied my best efforts. Joint freaks among us will enjoy trying to run up copies in the shop, or figuring out how to work one or rwo into the next coffee table. Be prepared to ad-lib, though-the text is no match for the drawings, and there's nothing here about how to Cut the joints. No matter, really-the value of a book such as this is the glimpse it gives of a rich and varied woodworking system unlike our own. In the latter half of the ISth century in France, before the last of the kings Louis climbed to the guillotine, the woodworking arts reached a peak. One master craftsman, Jacques Andre Roubo, surveyed all that was known of his art, and wrote it all down. His topics included general woodworking tools and methods, joinery and architectural woodworking (both interior and exterior), coachmaking, fancy veneer work (ebenisterie), and "menuisier en meubles," or movable woodwork-that is, furniture. Roubo's work finally totalled about 1300 oversized (11Y:;-in. by 16Y:;-in.) pages of text plus almOSt 400 full-page illustrations. The French firm of Leonce Laget (75 Rue de Rennes, 75006 Paris) publishes a facsimile of the complete Roubo, and now a Philadelphia entrepreneur, Walter Rich, is importing and selling the "movable woodwork" portion.
