The human face of war. Modern and postmodern war have much horror to offer us, as these
sailors, burned when a kamikaze hit their ship, have discovered. Despite its patriarchal ritualistic
resonances, which still account for much of its appeal, war has become something that happens
to us, not something that we do. Human-machine systems, bureaucratic and weapons, can
influence and decide battles, but individuals are now only victims. Perhaps there is a stoic heroism
in taking one's part as a living cog in the (postmodern war machine, but in the long run it is
difficult to see how such heroics serve the future of humanity. Victor Jorgensen, USN photographer.
