An experiment in artificial holocausts. The incendiary bombing of Hamburg, Germany, was a
test of the practicality of creating artificial firestorms. The success of the Hamburg raid, and
especially the destruction of Dresden in a later experiment, inspired the United States to make
such ''strategic bombing'' a primary focus of the air attacks on Japan. This photo is from June
20, 1944, long after most of residential Hamburg had been burned, and shows the results of a
successful attack on the Ebano oil refinery by B- 17s and B-24s of the 8th Air Force. USAAF
