Tea, 553-554.— The request of an envoy
from Arabia for tea-leaves (p. 554)
meets its counterpart in a similar docu-
ment recently translated by Sir E. D.
Ross (New China Review, Vol. I, p. 40),
who observes, "It is curious to note
from these memorials that tea, which
was first brought to Europe toward the
end of the sixteenth century, appears
to have been in demand in Arabia
long before that period." The ancient
Chinese form of the word for "tea"
was *da, which, like all initial dental
sonants, could pass into the palatal
series (hence mediaeval Chinese *dza
and dialect of Wa dzo), or could be
changed into the dental surd (hence
dialect of Fu-kien ta, the source of
our word "tea"; Korean ta, Annamese
tra).
