The FCM’s<br />

statement against<br />

the war in Iraq<br />

Islands and the major European cities. Historical<br />

figures such as critics Domingo Pérez Minik and<br />

Eduardo Westerdahl, poets Agustín Espinosa,<br />

Domingo López Torres and Pedro García Gabrera, or<br />

the painter Óscar Domínguez, are the main<br />

characters of this historic narrative, shot on location<br />

in Tenerife, Madrid and Paris.<br />

The talking gui<strong>de</strong> Lanzarote, <strong>art</strong>e y naturaleza was presented<br />

on 4 September. Francisco Lobatón and Tristán Escu<strong>de</strong>ro of<br />

REDacción 7, together with musicians Benito and Ramón<br />

Cabrera who interpret the musical themes inclu<strong>de</strong>d in the<br />

gui<strong>de</strong>, were present for the event.<br />

The talking gui<strong>de</strong> is an introduction to the natural and cultural<br />

assets of Lanzarote, with a special focus on the personality<br />

and work of <strong>César</strong> <strong>Manrique</strong>.<br />

This 70-minute gui<strong>de</strong> constitutes an itinerary around the<br />

island that st<strong>art</strong>s in Arrecife, runs to the North and centre<br />

of the island and from there, finally, to the Southern tip.<br />

The gui<strong>de</strong> is divi<strong>de</strong>d into twelve cuts: An island of fire and<br />

water; Arrecife; Lanzarote and <strong>César</strong> <strong>Manrique</strong>; Gar<strong>de</strong>ns,<br />

“jameos” and caves; Famara; Valleys and palm trees;<br />

Teguise; The lands; Timanfaya; La Geria and Yaiza; The gulf<br />

and salt; and The last frontier.<br />

Maximiano Trapero’s book of ballads from Lanzarote,<br />

Romancero General <strong>de</strong> Lanzarote, presented on 25<br />

September, was published as p<strong>art</strong> of the Torcusa series.<br />

The book was introduced by its author, head of the<br />

Dep<strong>art</strong>ment of Spanish Language and Literature at the<br />

University of Las Palmas Maximiano Trapero, as well as by<br />

the FCM Activities Director and Eladio Santana, full<br />

professor of Spanish Language and Literature at the<br />

University of Las Palmas.<br />

On 26 March 2003, the FCM issued an institutional<br />

statement on the attack on Iraq waged by the United<br />

States and Great Britain, supported by Spain. In that<br />

statement, the FCM stressed that it <strong>de</strong>fends the values of a<br />

culture of peace and co-existence and regards dialogue to<br />

be a value central to humanity. Consequently, the FCM, in<br />

recognition of its responsibility as a cultural institution,<br />
