On 4 July, the FCM publicised its letter to the Town Hall of
Tías calling upon the authorities to heed the request of the
communities affected by the proposed erection of mobile
telephone antennas; in essence, the institution supported the
application of the Principle of Precaution recommended by
the Council of the European Communities and the most
stringent international requirements with respect to limits to
radiation emissions and siting of the base antennas.
The FCM expressed its support for the Forum against
Incineration in its objection to the installation of a huge
incinerator in Arico.
In this regard, the FCM drafted a text noting that waste
management was one of the major challenges facing Canary Island
institutions and their credibility as far as sustainability is
concerned. The foundation considered installing new incinerators
on the archipelago to be tantamount to forgoing any attempt to
implement sustainable waste treatment systems.
In 2003, Antonio Estevan, industrial engineer and
environmental consultant, set out the adjustments required to
gradually adapt the inputs, processes, activities and products
used by the FCM to improve the sustainability of the
foundation’s operations and institute greater environmental
responsibility towards its surroundings.
Since January 1998, the FCM has had a seat on the Timanfaya
National Park Board of Trustees and as such has been attending
the periodic meetings of the park’s governing board. In 2003, the
FCM renewed its candidacy for membership on the board.
In 2003 the FCM renewed its institutional participation in the Biosphere
Reserve Council Governing Board, contributing, on the occasion of the
meetings held in 2003, to the discussion of issues such as the revision of
the island’s territorial organisation scheme, the project to conduct oil
prospecting surveys on the Canary Island coast and the membership of
the new governing board (2003-2007 legislature).
In 2003, FCM’s President José Juan Ramírez attended a
meeting to discuss the changes in the road to La Geria, in an
area that forms a part of a natural reserve benefiting from
regional Government protection.
