Residenceworkshop.
Resident artists
temporary exhibitions programme, namely Art-Nature, which
focuses on the work of national and international artists who
place nature at the hub of their creativity, while reinforcing its
own specific museum collection on the theme.
Miguel Ángel Blanco is regarded to be one of the most
representative Spanish contemporary artists who uses nature
as an artistic material. With sensitivities in harmony with
European Land art, Miguel Ángel Blanco’s approach to nature
in his oeuvre is that of a wanderer. In his outings he collects
tiny remnants of the natural surroundings: leaves, seeds, bark,
lichens, stones..., which he then uses to compose collagebooks,
a project he began in 1985 with the aim of creating a
huge Biblioteca del bosque [Woods library].
The exhibition at the FCM included 53 works, nine of which
were done by Miguel Ángel Blanco during his stay at
Lanzarote in the month of June, when he was invited to
participate in its Residence-workshop. Resident artists
programme. Four of the works displayed were recently
purchased by the FCM for its specific Art-Nature collection.
Miguel Ángel Blanco composes exceptional fragmentary
landscapes, in this case with scenes representing nature on
the Canary Islands, which the artist encloses in horizontally
laid boxes. The boxes, in turn, are covered by a few sheets of
different types of paper, treated in a number of ways, as a
prelude to the collage below.
The exhibition drew 19,086 visitors.
In 2003, the FCM organised yet another edition of its
Residence-workshop. Resident artists programme, in which
Nils-Udo and Thomas Joshua Cooper participated in previous
years.
Under this programme, the foundation invites artists
renowned on international circuits to work on projects
relating to Lanzarote’s natural surroundings and scenery, and
later acquires some of their production for its specific Art-
Nature collection.
The Residence-workshop. Resident artists programme, as the
backbone of the FCM’s temporary exhibitions and art
collection policy, integrates the institution’s plastic concerns
with its programming and acquisitions policy.
The project to develop the FCM collection, which focuses on
the relationship between art and nature, is closely associated
