This course, <strong>de</strong>livered at the Lanzarote School for Tourism<br />
from 18 to 21 March, purposes to introduce <strong>César</strong> <strong>Manrique</strong>’s<br />
work in Lanzarote and train monitors specialising in the<br />
subject. In 2003, five monitors were selected from among the<br />
trainees to collaborate with the FCM in its educational<br />
programme <strong>César</strong> <strong>Manrique</strong>. Public oeuvre.<br />
Workshops were held to introduce the FCM’s series of<br />
educational materials titled Getting to know the PIOT,<br />
mission possible, on the occasion of the First Environment<br />
Week sponsored by the local community association of<br />
Titerroy, Arrecife, from 22 to 26 September.<br />
From 29 to 31 October the FCM held a workshop-seminar<br />
titled What education for what society? <strong>de</strong>signed and<br />
<strong>de</strong>livered by Joan Subirats, head of the Dep<strong>art</strong>ment of Political<br />
Science of the Autonomous University of Barcelona.<br />
The seminar posed the educational problems facing<br />
today’s society in terms of the relationship between<br />
education and the community, social change and new<br />
educational dynamics.<br />
The issues addressed inclu<strong>de</strong>d the role of education and<br />
educational policy, the role of schools and their<br />
professionals and the role of education in changing society<br />
and new social dynamics.<br />

<strong>de</strong> la FCM ha continuado con el espacio<br />
<strong>de</strong> reflexión FFrroonntteerraass yy DDiirreecccciioonneess d<strong>de</strong>ell PPrrooggrreessoo,<br />
ha seguido en sus líneas <strong>de</strong> trabajo <strong>de</strong> ayudar<br />
a la contención <strong>de</strong>l crecimiento turístico y <strong>de</strong><br />
garaantizar equilibrios territoriales, ambientales y<br />
sociales, presentando alegaciones y sugerencias<br />
en pperiodos <strong>de</strong> exposición pública, elaborando informes<br />
y documentos <strong>de</strong> carácter medioambiental<br />
y p<strong>art</strong>iicipando en mesas especializadas.<br />

The <strong><strong>de</strong>p</strong><strong>art</strong>ment continued to sponsor its<br />
platform for reflection, Progress. Frontiers<br />
and Directions, while pursuing other lines of<br />
work aimed at containing tourist sprawl and guaranteeing<br />
territorial, environmental and social balance, by lodging<br />
allegations and suggestions in public enquiry periods, drafting<br />
environmental reports and documents and p<strong>art</strong>icipating in<br />
specialised panels and roundtables.<br />
This platform for reflection and <strong>de</strong>bate continues to be fully<br />
operational and is a reference and a centre of attention for<br />
the <strong>de</strong>velopment of contemporary societies. The speakers in<br />
2003 were Jorge Riechmann and Emilio Valerio.<br />
