and Directions
This course, delivered at the Lanzarote School for Tourism
from 18 to 21 March, purposes to introduce César Manrique’s
work in Lanzarote and train monitors specialising in the
subject. In 2003, five monitors were selected from among the
trainees to collaborate with the FCM in its educational
programme César Manrique. Public oeuvre.
Workshops were held to introduce the FCM’s series of
educational materials titled Getting to know the PIOT,
mission possible, on the occasion of the First Environment
Week sponsored by the local community association of
Titerroy, Arrecife, from 22 to 26 September.
From 29 to 31 October the FCM held a workshop-seminar
titled What education for what society? designed and
delivered by Joan Subirats, head of the Department of Political
Science of the Autonomous University of Barcelona.
The seminar posed the educational problems facing
today’s society in terms of the relationship between
education and the community, social change and new
educational dynamics.
The issues addressed included the role of education and
educational policy, the role of schools and their
professionals and the role of education in changing society
and new social dynamics.

ha seguido en sus líneas de trabajo de ayudar
a la contención del crecimiento turístico y de
garaantizar equilibrios territoriales, ambientales y
sociales, presentando alegaciones y sugerencias
en pperiodos de exposición pública, elaborando informes
y documentos de carácter medioambiental
y partiicipando en mesas especializadas.

The department continued to sponsor its
platform for reflection, Progress. Frontiers
and Directions, while pursuing other lines of
work aimed at containing tourist sprawl and guaranteeing
territorial, environmental and social balance, by lodging
allegations and suggestions in public enquiry periods, drafting
environmental reports and documents and participating in
specialised panels and roundtables.
This platform for reflection and debate continues to be fully
operational and is a reference and a centre of attention for
the development of contemporary societies. The speakers in
2003 were Jorge Riechmann and Emilio Valerio.
