CAPÍTULOIXEl avance de los AliadosA principios de setiembre de 1856 el ejército deNicaragua lue organizado con dos batallones de rifleros,dos de inlantería ligera, uno de batidores y una pequeñacompañia de artilleria. El prímer batallón derifleros era el cuerpo más completo y mejor del ejército;tenía escasamente doscientos hombres efectivos.El segundo de rifleros sólo era la sombra de un batallóny su disciplina habla sido poco menos que descuidada.Los batallones de inlanterla ligera eran másnumerosos que el segundo de rifleros, y algunas de suscompañlas, como por ejemplo la del capitán Henry delsegundo batallón, estaban bien ordenadas y en buenestado. Los batidores lormaban tres pequeñas compañlasmandadas por el mayor Waters y podlan prestarservicio activo. El capitán Sehwartz, con algunos artilleros.demostró ser competente para organizar su cuerpo,asi como conocer su prolesión; habia servido algúntiempo en calidad de olicial de artillerla en Baden durantelos disturbios revolucionarios de 1848. La luerzatotal electiva apenas llegaba a ochocientos hombres.El general Homsby mandaba el departamento Meridionalcon residencia unas veces en San Jorge yotras en Rivas o en San Juan del Sur. Tenia alU variascompañlas del primero de inlanterla y la secciónde artillerla del capitán Sehwartz, que apenas mereclael nombre de compañia. El primero de rilleros estabaen Granada y el segundo de Tipitapa al mando delcoronel MeDonald. El segundo de inlanteria se encontrabaen Masaya y lo mandaba el teniente coronel
