Bouteloua 1: 34-41 (XI-2006)húmedas y las marismas <strong><strong>de</strong>l</strong> Odiel originabanfocos <strong>de</strong> mosquitos en estos núcleos costeros.Para paliar sus molestas picaduras se cultivabanespecies <strong>de</strong> floración nocturna (Jasminum sp.,Lonicera sp., Cestrum parqui, etc.).El “Parque <strong>de</strong> los Cipreses” en ElCampillo sobrecoge por el extraño bosque <strong>de</strong>cipreses (Cupressus sempervirens f.horizontalis) que conserva. Este bosquemonoespecífico posiblemente se plantó parautilizar su ma<strong>de</strong>ra en la construcción <strong>de</strong> losféretros <strong>de</strong> los ingleses que fallecían en la mina.También asociado a la jardinería funerariasobresale el cementerio protestante <strong>de</strong>Bellavista (obra <strong>de</strong> Alan Bruce) <strong>de</strong> influenciaromántica utiliza la hiedra (He<strong>de</strong>ra sp.),cipreses (Cupressus sempervirens f.pyramidalis), tuya (Platycladus orientalis), etc.LOS JARDINEROS INGLESESDespués <strong>de</strong> la <strong>de</strong>saparición <strong>de</strong> las teleras(calcinación <strong><strong>de</strong>l</strong> mineral a cielo abierto) en1916, sustituidas por altas chimeneas, el medioambiente <strong>de</strong> la cuenca minera empieza arecuperarse <strong>de</strong> la contaminación. Los inglesesempiezan a revegetar este paisaje yermo <strong>de</strong> lamina, para lo cual contratan a los botánicosKAI HASE, y TON BURGUES.El primero era <strong>de</strong> nacionalidad danesa<strong>de</strong> la Universidad <strong>de</strong> Copenhague, llegó aRiotinto en 1916. Empezó a reforestar losterrenos <strong>de</strong> la mina con Pinus pinea, Pinushalepensis, Pinus radiata, etc., llegando inclusoa introducir el Pinus sylvestris en la cuencaminera. A partir <strong>de</strong> 1920 se empieza aintroducir el eucalipto (Eucaliptus spp.),iniciando una campaña <strong>de</strong> ajardinamiento <strong>de</strong> lapoblación, encargándose <strong><strong>de</strong>l</strong> césped <strong>de</strong>Bellavista, que fue primer campo <strong>de</strong> golfconstruido en España. La escritora CONCHAESPINA nos narra <strong>de</strong> forma magistral en laobra “El metal <strong>de</strong> los muertos” la lucha <strong>de</strong>titanes emprendida por estos jardineros pararever<strong>de</strong>cer el suelo <strong>de</strong> esquistos <strong><strong>de</strong>l</strong> An<strong>de</strong>valo:“Solo un momento aguardan allí, entretenidosen admirar la elegancia <strong><strong>de</strong>l</strong> parque sembrado <strong>de</strong>edificios ligeros y preciosos en los quepredomina el estilo colonial; están cubiertos <strong>de</strong>jazmines y yedras, bor<strong>de</strong>ados por gladiolos,laureles y alhelíes. En las avenidas y losmacizos crecen el ojaranzo y el arrayán, lasacacias y los chopos: una aportacióncostosísima <strong>de</strong> aguas y tiene obra el prodigio <strong>de</strong>que las plantas arraiguen sobre el yermo”.En 1950 se contrata al botánico TONBURGUES, que incentivó el cultivo <strong><strong>de</strong>l</strong>eucalipto en la cuenca. Posiblemente se trate <strong>de</strong>Thomas F. Burgers, ingeniero forestal holandéscontratado por la empresa N.V.Han<strong><strong>de</strong>l</strong>maastchappij Ibérica, propietaria en1927 <strong><strong>de</strong>l</strong> Coto Bayo y Los Cabezudos <strong>de</strong>Almonte. Este ingeniero realizó un estudiofitosociológico <strong><strong>de</strong>l</strong> entorno para <strong>de</strong>terminar lasespecies <strong>de</strong> crecimiento rápido más rentablespara la zona, <strong>de</strong>finiendo como formaciónclimáxica el pinar <strong>de</strong> pino piñonero y elalcornocal costero (Quercetum suberispteri<strong>de</strong>tosum).
