EDWARD STEICHEN, Soledad (Fred Holland Day), 1901. Sé'super~ba cuando fotografiaba a los líderes del mundo artístico~ .Se hizo amigo de Franc;ois-Auguste René Rodin, a quien retrató con frecuencia; se exhibió mucho una copia de combinación en goma, sobre dos negativos, que mostraba al escultor en silueta, delante de sus Victor Hugo y El pensador. También realizó una serie de desnudos que, por su fuerte contraste entre una. piel de iluminación brillante y los fondos sombríos, casi negros, suscitaron el sarcasmo de los cr:íticos, incluido George Bem~rd Sh;¡w. Una carpeta de fotogl'#ías de Steichen,con doce reproducci()nes a página entera, fue publicada en una importante revista fotográfica alemana, Die Photographisebe Rundschau, en julio de 1902, con un artículo elogioso por Emst Juhl,su editor de arte. ;}6 Tan ~calorada fue la reacción de los le,Ctotes, que J uhl se vio obligado a dimitir., Pero la ob,ra, de Steichen obtuvo el reconocimiento en Bélgica; ,su' foto TheBlaek Vase [El jarrón negro], queJ uhl había reproducido, fue comprado por el Gobierno para la.Galería ,Nacional en Bruselas.
