A. Rafolo - Authenticity and Integrity of the royal hill of Abohimanga (Madagascar), an associative cultural landscape
the traditional protection stemming from its
age-old, continuing sacred character. The site
was incorporated in the Department of the
Domains of the Colony in February 189724 and
included from February 1939*5 onwards in the
national inventory of the Colony of Madagascar
and Dependencies; it is covered by the
provisions of edict 82-029 of 6 November 1982
and ruling 83-116 of 31 March 1983 relating to
the safeguarding, protection and preservation of
the national heritage. The sacred character of
the site derives from the worship of bygone kings
and ancestors which is here associated with
features of the landscape that include, on the
one hand, the forest and the sacred lake and, on
the other hand, the royal city and the royal
tombs.
