1. This document is a testimony. 0,5 pt<br />

2. The narrator is Rosina, a servant. Two other servants<br />

are important in this testimony: Tommy Phipps and<br />

John, a footman. The master (his lordship) also has an<br />

important role in this story.<br />

3. The scene takes place at the Astor’s house in Sandwich,<br />

at night (we had just gone to bed / The whole house<br />

turned out in their dressing gowns).<br />

thief, the housekeeper fainted, Mr Billy called his dogs<br />

and went off with a knife, and the master followed with<br />

a golf club. Then, the police arrived and an inspector<br />

stayed to cross-examine the servants.<br />

7. Some servants didn’t get on well. Tommy Phipps was<br />

unpopular with the staff and one day took advantage of<br />

his position to tease John. So John took his revenge by<br />

scaring Tommy.<br />

8. The master reprimanded John but was also extremely<br />

angry with Mr Tommy, and he held him responsible for<br />

the whole incident. However, he protected his servants<br />

and refused to let the police arrest John. 2 pts<br />

9. This sentence means that the power of a master over<br />

his servants was more important than the power of the<br />

police. The police seem to follow the rules of the master,<br />

like the servants.<br />

– So John decided to get his own back. He used a toy pistol<br />

and planned eventually to reveal his identity.<br />
