It seems fitting tome that Europa Cinemas should celebrate thisanniversary in Paris, a city that has been at thecentre of film-making for decades.I am proud that the European Union has accompaniedthe growth of this important initiative fromits earliest days, and that the network continuesto innovate and expand, with the support of theMEDIA Programme. You have always recognisedthe importance of your audience and worked to ensurethat your cinemas remain at the heart of filmmaking. Is this not the ultimate dream of our filmdirectors—to see their work on cinema screensacross Europe?Digitization has had a profound impact on allaspects of film-making. I am encouraged by yourextensive use of social networks to increase visibilityand promote programming, as well as by yourcommitment to young audiences, as your annualawards demonstrate.Europe’s strength lies in its rich diversity of cinema, and digitization should be an opportunityfor all of us to enhance the circulation ofIl s’agit d’une année importante pour Europa Cinemas : nous célébronsavec vous non seulement les 20 ans de ce grand réseau, maisaussi 20 années de promotion du film et de talents européens dansdes pays toujours plus nombreux. ❖ Androulla VassiliouEuropean films and involve more young audiences.Unfortunately, this has a cost, in termsof new equipment, which in turn will need morefrequent updating than previous technologies. But it is vital that this investment is made at alllevels to ensure that our future generations seeEuropean films right where they belong—on thebig screen!I congratulate you for everything that you haveachieved. I am confident that Europa Cinemas willcontinue to make a vital contribution to preserve aEurope that is both proud of its own cinema andopen to other cultures and traditions.Europa Cinemas 20 th anniversary
4 ÉDITO / Ed Piece520 Years YoungIt seems hard to believe but EuropaCinemas turns 20 this year. What startedout as a campaign to remind thestill-new MEDIA programme that filmexhibition mattered – and that oneshould be reminded that all the stagesin the production and distribution chainmean nothing unless the public showsup – has led to a network that stretchesacross the continent, and beyond, encouragingexhibitors to maintain their faithin European cinema. As a member of the audience in threeE.C. cinemas recently, in the UK, Swedenand the Czech Republic, I wonderedwhat it meant to those around me whenthe network’s logo appeared before themain feature. Were they disappointedwhen they didn’t spot the name of theirhometown ? Or, as I have often heard, didthey momentarily feel part of somethinglarger ? That, of course, is what cinemaitself promised at the very beginning:to transport its audiences into anotherworld. And, perhaps surprisingly, afternearly 120 years, it’s still doing just that.Increasingly, via a new technology, digitalprojection, which is the last link in a chainIan Christie,président d’Europa CinemasEuropa Cinemas President20 ansLe bel âgeDifficile à croire, mais Europa Cinemas fêtecette année ses 20 printemps. EuropaCinemas has never doubted that the silverscreen will survive and prosper once thisnew technology is fully in place. We worryabout the uneven progress of conversionin some countries, but we believe thatmodernization has always been vital tokeep cinema alive, competing successfullywith other leisure activities.Of course, we also believe that it is morethan just a leisure activity. At its best, cinema gives us some of the most profoundexperiences of our lives. It takes usto places we would never visit by othermeans. And it poses challenges andquestions about the world around us, andour place in it. Audience research in theUK has shown that a majority of people(and not just cinema-goers) believe filmcan still offer a unique experience. Our late president, Claude Miller, was astaunch believer in the progress of cinema. ❖Ian Christie© ANTOINE LEGOND© mano© DR© dr© dr6 1220© DRUne publication Mondadori France.A Mondadori France publication.President : Ernesto MauriEDITORIAL ADVERTISING8, rue François-Ory, 92543 Montrouge CedexTel. : +33 1 41 33 50 02.Fax : +33 1 41 86 16 91.Directeur d’édition, rédacteur en chef /Publisher, editor in chief : Laurent Cotillon1826Sommaire3Edito / Op-ed Andrea VassiliouCommissaire européenne à l’Éducation,la Culture, le Multilinguisme et la JeunesseEuropean Commissioner for Education,Culture, Multilingualism and Youth4Edito / Op-ed Ian ChristiePrésident d’Europa CinemasEuropa Cinemas President6Bilan 20 ans / 20 th AnniversaryClaude-Éric PoirouxDg d’Europa CinemasManaging Director, Europa Cinemas12Interview / interviewAviva SilverResponsable du programme MEDIAMEDIA Unit chief14Enquête / InvestigationL’Europe prend le virage du numériqueEuropean Goes Digital18NUMÉRIQUE / DigitalLes exploitants européens continuent d’avancerEuropean exhibitors keep reaching milestones20Audience / AttendanceÉvolution de l’audience : retour vers le futurAudience evolution : Back to the future26MundusUn programme présent dans 26 paysMundus Program, a footprint in 26 countriesManager éditorial /Editorial manager : Vincent Le LeurchDirectrice artistique /Artistic Director : Lucie BouquetPremier secrétaire de rédaction /Associate Editor : Bamiyan ShiffSecrétaire de rédaction /Copy editor : Jaber TarhouniOnt collaboré / Contributors : Jean-PhilippeGuerand, Annika Pham, Fabien Lemercier,Patrice Carré, Geoffrey Macnab, Martin BlaneyMelanie Goodfellow, Liza ForemanContentsDirectrice de la publicité /Advertising Director : Sylvie MarceauPublicité internationale / Int’l Advertising :Markus Duffner (+39 328 71 41 367)Contrôle de gestion /Budget Control Director : Guillaume ZaneskisDirectrice marketing /Marketing Manager : Pauline LiebensGravure / Origination :ASTO, 21-23, bd Richard-Lenoir, 75011 ParisImpression / Printing :Imprimerie de Compiègne, 60200 Compiègne28PAYS PAR PAYS / COUNTRY BY COUNTRY28 Allemagne / Germany30 Austria / Autriche32 Benelux (Belgique, Pays-Bas, Luxembourg) /Benelux (Belgium, The Netherlands, Luxembourg)35 Bulgarie, Roumanie / Bulgaria, Romania36 Espagne / Spain38 France / France40 Grèce, Malte, Chypre / Greece, Malta, Cyprus41 Hongrie / Hungary42 Irlande / Ireland44 Italie / Italy46 Lichtenstein / Lichtenstein47 Pays baltes (Estonie, Lituanie, Lettonie) /Baltic States (Estonia, Lithuania, Latvia)48 Pologne / Poland50 Portugal / Portugal51 Slovénie, Croatie / Slovenia, Croatia52 Royaume-Uni / United Kingdom54 Scandinavie (Danemark, Finlande, Islande,Norvège, Suède) / Scandinavia (Denmark, Finland,Iceland, Norway, Sweden)58 République tchèque / Czech Republic59 Slovaquie / Slovakia60CHIFFRES / FIGURESL’Europe en chiffresEurope by numbersAbonnements / Subscriptions+33 1 41 33 50 94pauline.liebens@mondadori.frÉditeur / PublisherMondadori Magazines France SASSiège Social : 8, rue François-Ory92543 Montrouge Cedex© Le film françaisContents are copyright and cannot bereproduced without permission.A special issue by Le film français.Europa Cinemas 20 e anniversaireEuropa Cinemas 20 th anniversary
