❖Ctd from page 8◗◗In 2004, ten new countries joinedthe European Union. Has this expansionaffected the network’s functioning? It has. We added a diversity target to the programmingevaluation criteria, in order to take intoaccount the new film offer. The idea was to give cinemasan incentive to include these new countriesin their offer. Now, there usually are films comingfrom 14 different countries shown on our network’sscreens. About the network itself, we have treatedits development in these new countries as a priorityto avoid ending up with an unbalanced presencebetween the East and the West, which has so farworked out pretty well.◗◗Europa Cinemas has also expandedoutside the frontiers of the EuropeanUnion…We expanded beyond the European Union whenwe set up Eurimages in 1993 to include countriesthat were members of the Council of Europe. From 2004 onwards, we extended our action toother countries and, in conjunction with MEDIAMundus, we set up Europa Cinema Mundus in responseto requests from distributors and exhibitorsbeyond Europe. There are now more than 90 distributors,215 cinemas with several hundred screensthat are members of our network in 26 countriesin South America, Asia and the Mediterraneanarea. And, from 2013, distributors and exhibitorsin South Africa will be receiving our support.there areNow more than20 mini-networksdistributedin 14 Countries.◗◗To conclude, how do you seethe network’s future? The transition to digital still has not been resolvedin all our cinemas. There are between 150 and200 cinemas that are struggling to finance thistransition. Financing solutions must be found, these cinemas cannot be allowed to close down,it would be a terrible waste. Then there’s the questionof cinemas in the digital era, and this is notsimply the transition from 35 mm to 2K. We mustuse the internet and social media to find new waysof diversifying programming, promoting films andevents and attracting and retaining our audiences. Our exhibitors are very motivated by these challengesand new perspectives. The main challengeover the next years will be to enhance the prestigeof cinemas: it’s much more rewarding to discovera film on a big screen in a cinema than to click onyour personal computer. ❖◗◗Belgique / BelgiumBruxelles/Brussels : Arenberg Galeries, Vendôme.Gand/Gent : Studio Skoop. ❖Interview with Aviva SilverEuropa Cinemasa network growingfrom strength to strengthMEDIA unit chief Aviva Silver speaks about the achievementsof Europa Cinemas over the last two decades, and explainsthe thinking behind the Commission’s €2m preparatory actionfor “Circulation of films in the digital era”. ■ martin blaney‘There’s one workshop I’d always like to goto at the Europa Cinemas’ (E.C.) conference,it’s the one on interacting with the audience,”MEDIA unit chief Aviva Silver reveals, aheadof the network’s conference 20 th edition in Paris.“Whilst I am always sitting on the digital panel,I can hear the laughter coming from the otherroom. I get feedback from my team who are there, and I think, that’s the panel I’d like to be in!”Looking back over two decades of E.C.’s activities,Silver says that the network’s achievementsare “absolutely enormous: you have growth intoa network which accounts roughly 6% of cinemasin Europe. It means that our decisions havean impact. Moreover, the structure of EuropaCinemas plays an important role. The network’smembers being independent operators, they don’thave a head office like Gaumont, Pathé or UGCdo. It is therefore important to have a team whichis able to respond to their concerns about what ishappening in the industry.”She also expresses satisfaction in the fact thatthere is a closer relationship between EuropeanCinemas and the other exhibitors’ trade associations,CICAE and UNIC. Even if that wasmainly thanks to the preparatory action of theCommission. The latter helped them to sit downtogether in order to write, in September, a jointletter to its own offices and to the EuropeanParliament. “That’s good because, on somelevels, cinemas have a common position,” sheobserves. “One of the most important thingsabout Europa Cinemas for me is that they havenot rested on their laurels, but actually gone out© DRand tried to use new technologies, such as socialnetworks, Facebook for example. Basically getpeople back to the cinema, like they did with theMother and Baby initiative.”Meanwhile, this fall saw the Commission’sannouncement of three projects to be funded aspart of its preparatory action for “Circulation offilms in the digital era”. It is meant to facilitatesimultaneous releases across several platforms.Financing was provided to the U.K.’s ArtificialEye and France’s Wild Bunch and ARP, to experimentwith day-and-date releases of art housefilms in Germany, France, the U.K., Poland,Spain, Italy, the Netherlands, Ireland, Belgiumand Luxembourg. The partners range fromItaly’s Bim, Spain’s Vertigo, Poland’s GutekFilms through Europa Distribution and the UK’sGoldcrest to German sales agent The MatchFactory.“Within the framework of the preparatory action,we have had a lot of discussions with operatorsabout what all this means and whether theCommission is altering its policy about cinemaand exhibition. I would stress that we stronglybelieve in cinemas and that they are the placewhere people should go and see films, but wealso accept that people want to see movies elsewhereas well. The reason behind the preparatoryaction is to say that we don’t want to leavecinemas out of this brave new world – they shallnot stop existing – and that’s why we insist onprojects which involve them. We think that, at thepresent time, and indeed in the future, the communalexperience is and will continue to be incinemas, and that any strategy for bringing out afilm should include that”.Indeed, the Commission’s lasting commitmenttoward European cinemas is shown by the factthat it has extended E.C.’s contract by anothertwo years, to the end of 2014.“What is important is that we are continuing tosupport this highly performing network in favourof European films. And the fact that the networkhas grown from strength to strength over theyears, partly thanks to the vision of Claude-ÉricPoiroux as an ex-distributor, theatre owner andfestival organiser, but also thanks to the involvementof all those hundreds of cinema exhibitorswho are passionate about the industry andabsolutely want to provide the cinema-goers witha real choice.” ❖Europa Cinemas 20 e anniversaireEuropa Cinemas 20 th anniversary
