KINAM MAGAZINE — FEBRUARY | MARCH 2021
It's becoming a trend in
Republican politics late
ly. That is, leaving people
behind for dead.
Recently, a reputable British
medical journal puts the blame
for 40% of the coronavirus
deaths in the United States
squarely at the feet of former
President Donald J. Trump. His
inaction and gross failure of
leadership is responsible for at
least 200,000 deaths. At its
present pace, epidemiologists
are projecting 600,000 deaths
within a couple months.
But oddly, just a few days
ago a Republican Senator took
an ill-advised flight to Cancun,
Mexico with his family in tow
on a vacation getaway smackdab
in the middle of a humanitarian
crisis back home.
Among the tragic deaths
that ensued an 11-year-old
child froze to death in a mobile
home while an elderly man
perished from the bitter cold
in his recliner.
EvenTed Cruz' (the Senator
in question) family dog Snow
Flakes was left behind.
Across the Lone Star state,
28 people perished as an artic
blast paralyzed an unprepared
electrical grid. The extreme
temperatures froze natural gas
wells, wind turbines, nuclear
and solar sensors that were not
weatherized for the cold freeze.
Because Texas' electrical
grid is designed as a standalone,
it does not share its electricity
with other states to
avoid federal tampering, oversight
or regulations. It came
— 61 —
close to a total, debilitating
shutdown. Restoration of
power would have taken
months. The Electric Reliability
Council of Texas controls
90% of the state’s power production
and distribution.
El Paso which is a part of
the Western Grid experienced
no blackouts.
Water pipes froze and busted
in thousands of homes, and
streets and highways remained
impassable for days. Up to Friday,
residents with containers
joined long queues to fetch water.
The death toll continues to
rise.
But the most historic 'left
for dead' event this year has
been the siege on the Capitol
where a sitting Republican
President unleashed a sedi-
