2. Visiting Students – self-funded or sponsored students from <strong>universiti</strong>es that do<br />

not have any mutual agreement with UM or students from <strong>universiti</strong>es that fall in<br />

group one but have sent the maximum numbers <strong>of</strong> students stipulated in the<br />

agreement.<br />

Organization <strong>of</strong> Education Program<br />

Students participating in the program may choose to enroll in one or more <strong>of</strong> the courses<br />

below:<br />

1. Regular academic undergraduate or postgraduate courses.<br />

2. Co-curriculum courses (practical courses in the areas <strong>of</strong> culture, arts <strong>and</strong> sports).<br />

3. Supervised independent research. Students may identify their own choice <strong>of</strong><br />

faculty members to be the supervisor.<br />

4. Language courses (Malay or English) at certificate level <strong>of</strong>fered by the University<br />

<strong>of</strong> Malaya Center for Continuing Education (UMCCed).<br />

Having basic Malay language pr<strong>of</strong>iciency is an added advantage to students who wish<br />

to enroll in undergraduate courses, as the medium <strong>of</strong> instruction for most <strong>of</strong> the courses<br />

is the Malay Language, especially in Arts based Faculties. For the benefit <strong>of</strong> students<br />

who are not pr<strong>of</strong>icient in the language they may register for courses taught in English<br />

only. For <strong>Science</strong>s based Faculties, the medium <strong>of</strong> instruction is English Language.<br />

Credits<br />

Study Abroad students are required to enroll between 9 - 15 credit hours per semester,<br />

subject to availability <strong>of</strong> courses <strong>and</strong> university approval. While enjoying educational<br />

exposure in Malaysia, students participating in this program will have the privilege to<br />

accumulate credit hours towards the award <strong>of</strong> a degree at their home country. Students<br />

who intend to do so are required to submit a letter <strong>of</strong> support from their home university<br />

<strong>and</strong> make their own arrangement with their university. Upon completion <strong>of</strong> the program<br />

students will receive an academic transcript.<br />

Duration <strong>of</strong> Stay<br />

Students may choose to enroll for one semester or one year <strong>of</strong> the study program. For<br />

cases when students need extra time to complete their research, they may apply for an<br />

extension to their stay to a maximum <strong>of</strong> six months.<br />

Academic Calendar<br />

Semester 1 July until November<br />

Semester 2 December until May<br />

Fees<br />

Exchange students will get a tuition fee waiver, limited to a specific number <strong>of</strong> students<br />

stipulated in the agreement. Other expenses such as airfare, accommodation,<br />

administrative fees, visa charges <strong>and</strong> living are self-funded. Non-exchange (visiting)<br />

students pay all fees in full.
