Necessary data Lists the data needed to build the indicator and provides indications on how they can be
obtained in practice, taking into account different possible organisational models.
Formula Provides the mathematical formula needed for the calculation, with a precise definition of
numerator and denominator.
Interpretation Describes the main problems that may arise in the interpretation of results.
Reference standards Each standard almost always presents two levels:
acceptable, which represents the minimum (or maximum) value the indicator
should reach
desirable, which represents the ideal value.
In cases when no standard could be defined, collection of data is suggested and monitoring
of the indicator, so that it may be possible to draw later on indications on the soundness,
usefulness, and adequacy of the parameter and the value of the standard to be
defined.
