Mark tobey: beyond form and being
la mostra presenta numerose opere provenienti dalla collezione di Mark ritter - amico e
segretario di Mark tobey - la maggior parte delle quali risale agli anni ’60. Questo insieme
riflette il lavoro meticoloso e brillante di un artista che si è liberato del gesto per giungere
ad una scrittura pittorica in cui lo spirito domina il segno, in una tradizione prossima alla
calligrafia giapponese. i suoi quadri, spazi densi di aplats e linee ripetitive, sono semplici e
al tempo stesso complessi, intricati ed intuitivi. le marcate tonalità di marrone e di grigio, le
sottili pennellate di colore, richiamano spesso il mondo naturale ed in particolare la natura
viene messa in primo piano. esse evocano l’immagine di un reticolo di cellule visto attraverso
il microscopio, una superficie rocciosa erosa dalle intemperie, o le striature sulla corteccia di
un albero.
Mark tobey, nato nel 1890 a centerville nel Wisconsin, nel Midwest degli Stati uniti, trascorre
un’infanzia felice lungo le rive del Mississipi. disegnatore di talento, nel 1911 si stabilisce a
new york dove si avvia alla carriera di illustratore di moda. la sua vera vocazione si rivela
nel corso del decennio seguente, quando si converte alla fede bahá’í che da allora trasforma
la sua visione del mondo e la sua pratica artistica. la sua vita è caratterizzata da numerosi
viaggi e prolungati soggiorni in europa, oriente e Asia. dopo aver divorziato, nel 1922 si
trasferisce a Seattle dove, nel 1923, incontra teng Kuei, studente e pittore cinese che lo inizia
the exhibition presents a large number of works, which mostly date from the 1960s,
from the collection of Mark ritter, the friend and secretary of Mark tobey. the set of
works reflects the meticulous and luminous work of an artist who freed himself from
gesture in favour of a pictorial script in which the spirit dominates the sign in a tradition
close to Japanese calligraphy. his canvases, spaces dense with flat tints and repetitive
lines, are both simple and complex, intellectual and intuitive. their prominent browns
and greys, and the subtle touches of colour are often suggestive of the natural world
and, in particular, of nature seen close up. they are reminiscent of networks of cells
seen through a microscope, a rocky surface furrowed by the elements, or the wrinkles
on the bark of a tree.
Mark tobey was born in 1890 in the American Midwest, in centerville, Wisconsin, and
spent a happy childhood on the banks of the Mississippi. A talented draughtsman, he
settled in new york in 1911, where he planned to become a fashion illustrator. however,
his real vocation was to become apparent during the following decade when he converted
to the bahá’í Faith, which altered his view of the world and artistic practice. throughout
his life he travelled and enjoyed prolonged stays in europe, the orient and Asia. After
his divorce, he settled in Seattle in 1922, where a year later he met teng Kuei, a chinese
