Schumann, debussy, gershwin e naturalmente il blues. i musicisti jazz diventano
oggetto di una serie di disegni nei quali la vitalità e il ritmo accompagnano una musica
impercettibile ma presente nella vivacità e nello slancio del tratto.
le opere di questo periodo, numerose delle quali sono presenti in mostra, illustrano la
molteplicità delle ricerche e dei supporti. così, ad esempio, untitled (buste de femme)
è un pastello misto su carta pregiata. eseguita nel 1960, quest’opera trasmette una
sensazione leggera, quasi umoristica. Alcune linee tracciate delicatamente, a forma di
onde, permettono di intravvedere i vortici obliqui e la grana della carta. trees in autum,
tempera su papier froissé, utilizza anch’esso la superficie della carta per aggiungere
all’opera dettagli e struttura. È una composizione astratta in blu, grigio e bianco, la cui
luminescenza – benché l’immagine scaturisca piuttosto dal titolo – evoca la forma dei rami
spogli sullo sfondo di un cielo autunnale sbiadito.
Mark tobey riceve numerosi riconoscimenti internazionali. nel 1961 riceve il primo premio
del carnegie institute di pittsburgh ed espone a parigi al Musée des Arts décoratifs. nel
1962 il Museum of Modern Art di new york organizza una nuova retrospettiva della sua
opera. nel 1966 tobey compie un viaggio ad haïfa e a Madrid, dove la visita al prado lo
segna profondamente, turbando il suo spirito e amplificando le sue esigenze. la sua vita
accompany an inaudible sound track made present by the life and fervour of the line.
the works of this period, many of which are included in the exhibition, illustrate the
multiplicity of his research and materials. For example, untitled (bust of a Woman) is
a mixed pastel on high quality paper. executed in 1960, this work transmits a feeling of
lightness, almost humorousness. the delicately traced lines, in forms of waves, enable
us to see the oblique swirls and grain of the paper. trees in Autumn is a tempera painting
on crumpled paper that takes advantage of the paper surface to add details and texture
to the work. it is an abstract composition in blue, grey and white, whose luminescence is
evocative of bare branches set against the colourless autumn sky, though this image is
suggested more from the title.
Mark tobey received many international awards. in 1961 he won First prize at the carnegie
institute in pittsburgh, and showed at the Musée des Arts décoratifs in paris. A year later
the Museum of Modern Art in new york organised a new retrospective of his work, and in
1966 he travelled to haifa and Madrid, where he was strongly impressed by his visit to the
prado.
he was an artist with an emotional spirit, whose needs became increasingly greater. his
life and art are indissociable, in keeping with the concept of unity his religious universe

non ha dato luogo alle speculazioni che determinano la posterità di un’opera attraverso
i profitti che ne risultano. benché sempre presente nelle gallerie rinomate (beyeler,
Jeanne bucher…), i suoi ultimi anni in europa lo hanno escluso dal predominante mercato
americano, che stabilisce le quotazioni e la notorietà e che mai gli perdonò di aver
abbandonato gli Stati uniti.
Mark tobey, definito “il vecchio maestro della giovane pittura americana”, muore a basilea
il 24 aprile 1976, lasciando un’opera di importanza internazionale che resta ancora da
scoprire.
was founded upon. in tobey’s philosophy there is no separation between aesthetics and the
material and spiritual imperatives. All divisions must be transcended and all antagonism
resolved. his quest is apparent as much in his art as in his religious and mystical practice.
it was this that made him a difficult and demanding individual little inclined to compromise
with society. that probably explains his prolonged absence from the international scene.
despite its unquestioned place in art history, his work never was the object of the
marketing games that decide their posterity on the basis of the profits they generate.
Although always present in reputed galleries (beyeler, Jeanne bucher…), the last years
of life that he spent in europe effectively cut him out of the dominant American market,
which governs an artist’s market price and renown, and which did not forgive him his
departure from the united States.
Mark tobey, who was referred to as “the old master of the young American painters”, died
in basel on 24 April 1976, leaving an oeuvre of international importance that is yet to be
discovered.
