ciò che chiamo l’impulso calligrafico che ha aperto nuovi
orizzonti per il mio lavoro. così ho potuto dipingere il
disordine e il tumulto delle grandi città, l’intersecarsi di
luci ed il flusso di persone catturate nella maglia della
loro rete.
cosa possiamo fare con qualcosa che abbiamo se non ne
abbiamo coscienza e non abbiamo alcun rapporto con lo
stesso? Se quell’essenza sottile, ma potente, che lega tutte
le cose e le rende tutte figlie di sé stesse deve trovare posto
solo nei nostri cuori e nelle nostre menti!
tutto si spiega se ci si prende la briga di osservare.
così come la nuova musica moderna richiede un nuovo
orecchio, la nuova arte richiede un nuovo occhio. non
posso insegnare alla maggior parte delle persone a
dipingere, ma posso aiutarle a vedere ciò che io ho visto.
lo stile della scrittura non è un’astrazione. ogni linea
ha uno scopo ed un significato rilevante per l’insieme. e,
sottolineo, è l’insieme che conta. la pittura contemporanea
What can we really ever do with anything we have if we
have no consciousness of it and no relations to it; if that
subtle but powerful essence with binds all things together
and makes them all children of itself is to find no place in
our hearts and in our minds!
All things are easily explained if persons will take the trouble
to see. Just as the new music of today needs a new ear, the
new art needs a new eye. i can’t teach most people to paint,
but i can help them to see what i have seen. the writing style
is not an abstraction. each line has a purpose and a meaning
important to the whole. And here i must emphasize it is the

has created follow him. they go with him and their style

unificante che scorre attraverso i compartimenti della vita, e
queste danno forza allo spirito e rinnovano costantemente le
loro energie affinché vi sia una maggiore comprensione della

nessun giovane artista può crescere a meno che non emuli

kept the oriental as a slant-eyed mystery, is breaking
down. Since the last world war we can now perhaps
see the orientals as human beings, as ourselves, with
a cultural background as great as that of european

sta crollando. A partire dall’ultimo conflitto mondiale,
probabilmente stiamo cominciando a vedere gli orientali come
esseri umani, come noi stessi, con un background culturale
importante tanto quello dei paesi europei. che ciò non fosse
stato approfondito molto tempo fa era indubbiamente dovuto al
fatto che coloro che immigravano verso le aree della costa
pacifica, arrivavano senza un background religioso, il che non ci
consentiva di apprezzare gli stessi e le loro grandi risorse
culturali. chi poteva dubitare del fatto che il centro della loro
verità, il cristo, non l’avrebbe pensata proprio così? la sfida
dell’uomo oggi, nella mia parte del mondo, è di accettare
questo processo di svezzamento, rimuovendolo dai limiti del
passato con i suoi relativi nazionalismi e regionalismi.
possiamo solo augurarci che dalla confusione della cosiddetta
era moderna sorga l’inizio di un nuovo mondo o, nel migliore
dei casi, una transizione ad un mondo migliore. È indubitabile
che i benefici materiali siano notevoli e che le scoperte siano

he has surrounded himself. in his belief in materialism he
can but continue along old lines and these outworn modes

l’uomo sembra aver scoperto tutto quanto sia necessario
per creare un nuovo mondo coraggioso, ma ha trascurato e
sta trascurando se stesso. Se vogliamo sfuggire ai pericoli
imminenti, ciò sarà possibile solo rinnovando i poteri spirituali
o, piuttosto, svegliandoci dagli abissi del materialismo dal quale
siamo circondati. continuando a credere nel materialismo, non
si può che continuare a percorrere i vecchi tracciati, e queste
modalità di pensiero sovrautilizzate ci faranno sprofondare
ulteriormente nelle difficoltà, poiché la vera essenza del
materialista è la competizione, la sfiducia e lo scetticismo. il
vero mondo dell’uomo è il proprio pensiero, e questo è riflesso
nell’arte così come in tutto ciò che fa.
che cosa sarà l’arte? Se l’uomo riuscirà mai a trovare valori
fondamentali, strutture durature, per una vita libera da guerre,
lo farà solo nell’ambito dello spirito, e non allargando le proprie
conoscenze sulla luna o perfino sul sole. può certamente
continuare a dividere atomi, ma a meno che non rivendichi il
diritto di nascita, che è dello spirito, questi è spacciato. Senza i
poteri curativi dello spirito, rimane ammalato di antagonismi,

What art will be if man ever finds fundamental values as

is of the spirit he is doomed. Without the healing powers
of the spirit he remains sick with antagonisms, fears
and hatreds which degrade him to a station below that of
animals.
Man today is challenged to extend his mental and spiritual
horizons. geographical barriers have given way before
the light of science, invention and psychology. the great
inventions that have demolished the former sense of
special difference must await a new man who will use
