Luxos Discoveries
by Sandro Bellei
discovering Modena
a true centre of industrial, creative and gastronomic excellence,
not forgetting wine: Modena the small city of great riches.
MoDENA, pICCoLA CITTà MA GrANDE CApI-
TALE DEL LUSSo. Basti pensare che, in un fazzoletto
d’orizzontale terra padana, operai dalle
tesori come l’aceto balsamico tradizionale,
Championship oh the world of cheeses, ha sbaragliato
i migliori “colleghi” francesi, svizzeri
e belgi.
MoDENA THE SMALL BUT GrEAT CApITAL oF
LUxUry. Think only of the workers with their
golden fingers (or, as they say in these parts
“with the skill to put feet on flies”) who, in that
flat, pocket-sized piece of land known as padania,
craft almost completely by hand the dream
cars that the whole planet envies us for. And,
above all, which it buys, contributing in no small
way to buoying the trade balance of this province
whose revenue can be termed Bavarian. We
are talking about the Ferraris, the Maseratis and
the Lamborghinis, which bear the Modena banner
far and wide and, as a result, are the ambassadors-at-large
for the other elite products that
the city successfully makes and markets. Treasures
such as traditional balsamic vinegar, bubbly
Sorbara Lambrusco with its violet colour and
bouquet (the best-selling Italian red wine worldwide)
and tangy parmigiano-reggiano, a cheese
that in the first edition of the “Championship of
the World of Cheeses” beat even the best French,
Swiss and Belgian cheeses.
