Trento, 1943. Chiara è una giovane
maestra che vive l’orrore della guerra
cercando disperatamente di dare un
senso a quello che sta accadendo.
All’indomani dell’armistizio, afflitta
da mille dubbi e da mille domande,
mentre vaga per la città martoriata dai
bombardamenti, si ferma davanti ad
una statua della Madonna e capisce
che Dio è l’unico ideale che non è
crollato. La donna sceglie, così, di vivere
concretamente il Vangelo con un’unica
missione: fare in modo “che tutti siano
uno”.

lives the horror of war trying desperately to
make sense of what is happening.The day
after the armistice, plagued by a thousand
doubts and a thousand questions, as she
wanders through the bombed-out city, she
stops in front of a statue of the Madonna and
realizes that God is the only ideal that has not
collapsed. Thus the woman chooses to live
the Gospel concretely with a single mission: to
ensure that “all are one”.

lingua inglese dell’acclamato regista
russo-francese Pavel Lungin. “Esau”,
adattato dall’omonimo romanzo
dell’autore israeliano Meir Shalev,
racconta di uno scrittore di 40 anni che
torna nella sua casa di origine, dopo
metà vita passata altrove, per affrontare
il fratello che gli ha rubato sia l’amore
che i mezzi di sostentamento. La storia
è una moderna rivisitazione della storia
biblica di Giacobbe ed Esaù nel libro
della Genesi.

“Esau,” the first English-language film from
acclaimed Russian-French director Pavel
Lungin. “Esau,” which has been adapted
from the homonymous novel by Israeli author
Meir Shalev, follows a 40-year-old writer who
returns to his family home after half a lifetime,
to face the brother who stole both his love and
livelihood. The story is a modern twist on the
biblical story of Jacob and Esau in the book
of Genesis.
