In 1999 had deze Amerikaanse auteur zijn landgenoten opgeroepen om hem waargebeurde verhalen te bezorgen die klonken als fictie. Met overweldigend succes. Als er ergens ook een goudmijn aan diepmenselijke verhalen moest te vinden zijn dan wel in Genk: een snel gegroeide stad met meer dan 65.000 inwoners afkomstig uit heel Europa en ver daarbuiten. Dit ambitieuze plan kreeg nog een extra dimensie toen kunstenaar Koenraad Tinel zich liet inspireren door de sterke verhalen die van grote betekenis waren geweest voor het leven van de vertellers. Onder impuls van een enthousiast team groeide het sociaal-artistieke totaalproject VERTELGENKVERTEL uit tot een breed gedragen initiatief dat ook over de stadsgrenzen heen weerklank vond. Dit leidde tot een rijke en gevarieerde oogst van universele verhalen die ruim een eeuw geschiedenis bleken te omspannen. VertelGenkVertel Een wereld van verhalen When writer Stefan Brijs was invited to host a project in his hometown Genk, his mind quickly turned towards an experiment similar to the one his American colleague/writer Paul Auster conducted in the USA. In 1999 Auster had sent out an invitation to his compatriots to send him stories, true stories with real people but as fantastic and universal as fiction. This turned out to be an overwhelming success. If anywhere in Belgium there’s a breeding ground for such stories, it has to be in Genk. A fast growing city with 65.000 inhabitant originating from all over Europe and beyond. An extra, artistic dimension was added to the plan, when artist Koenraad Tinel decided to make over 170 imaginative illustrations bringing the stories alive. An enthusiastic multidisciplinary team put its shoulders to the wheel and gave this project a broad social-artistic dimension, extending far beyond the city’s borders. © Koenraad Tinel
