Schilders vonden van bij het begin van het impressionisme
schoonheid en rust aan zee, in de
onmetelijke duinvlakten en in de aangrenzende
polderweiden. Het landschap aan de Oostkust was
voor velen een nieuwe inspiratiebron. Maar wat hen
vooral in vervoering bracht was het speciale ‘licht’
dat er heerste. ‘Van het atelier naar de kust’ toont
een stuk lokale geschiedenis met een bovenlokale
betekenis, weergegeven in verf en kleur.
From the start of the epoch of impressionism,
painters have been drawn to the seaside because
of its beauty and its peace, its immense stretches
of dunes and the surrounding Polder pastures. For
many, this East Coast landscape provided a whole
new source of inspiration. They were particularly
attracted by the special ‘light’ quality of the area.
‘From the studio to the coast’ shows us a piece of
local history of supra-local significance, depicted in
paint and colour.
Kunstenaars aan de Westkust
Van Nieuwpoort over Koksijde tot De Panne — 1830-1975
Aan de Westkust – het gebied tussen IJzermonding
en Franse grens – is de ontwikkeling van het toerisme
trager op gang gekomen dan elders aan onze kust en
dat was een zegen voor kunstenaars van alle slag.
Met de grootste gedrevenheid hebben zij de onvatbare
diversiteit van het zeeklimaat weergegeven.
Emile Verhaeren, Willem Elsschot, Jean Cocteau,
Louis Artan, Paul Delvaux, George Grard of Roel
D’Haese, Charles Gounod,... hebben De Panne,
Koksijde, Sint-Idesbald, Oostduinkerke en Nieuwpoort
op de kaart van de kunstgeschiedenis gezet, op uiteenlopende
en verrassende wijze.

estuary and the French border, saw a slower rise of
mass tourism and remained relatively unattained
for a long time, which has been a blessing for artists
