Brazil will hold the main symposium on hydraulic machines - IAHR
Candidacy structuring
In order to structure the proposal for launching Brazil as a candidate,
the group developed a letter reporting Brazil's potentials,
and also the potentials of Mercosul and of the other Latin American
countries regarding the market of hydraulic machines and other
hydro-mechanical equipment. The main projects that were presented
were the large hydroelectric plants that are now being discussed
in Brazil such as Belo Monte Hydroelectric Plant with a estimate
power of 11,000 Megawatts (MW) and the plants of Jirau and
Santo Antonio in the River Madeira, which together will have a power
ranging about 6,450 MW, and represent the installation of more
than 60 bulblike generating groups with approximately a diameter
of 8 meters. There is also the possibility of the transposition of
the River São Francisco, where the installation of hydraulic pumps
of 10MW is forecast.
Some folders were prepared, showing the possible dates for
the event, and an institutional video showing some socio-economic
aspects of the country, as well as o the landscape and images of Itaipú
was also produced, based on materials given by ALSTOM, Itaipu
Binacional and Embratur/Ministry of Tourism.
During the event in Yokohama, the Brazilian group was warmheartedly
received, mainly by Professor François Avellan, Professor
Junichi Kurokawa, chairman of the event and Professor Hiroshi
Tanaka, who did not measure their efforts to fulfill the needs of the
EVENTS
With a significant institutional support coming from Alstom Power do Brasil, the commission that was formed to launch Brazil as a candidate
to hold the 24th Symposium of the International Association Researches on Hydraulics, section Hydraulic Machines and Systems,
succeeded. The next symposium will be in Brazilian territory.
This event takes place every two years and is promoted by the International Association Engineering and Research – IAHR. This year,
the event was held in Yokohama, Japan.
The idea came from Professor François Avellan, Swiss Federal Institute of Technology, Lousanne, president of IAHR section of Hydraulic
Machines and Systems, whose interest is to approximate the South America association because of its importance within the worldwide
scenario of hydraulic machines.
In a meeting organized by ALSTOM that took place at L'Hotel in the city of São Paulo on September 14th, there were several representatives
of the national industry such as VOITH, ANDRITZ VATECH and ALSTOM. Representatives of Brazilian universities such as UNIFEI
(Federal University of Itajubá), USP (University of São Paulo), UNITAU (University of Taubaté) and IME (Military Institute of Engineering)
were also present.
Once the possibility of Brazil holding the next symposium had been discussed, a commission was formed in order to elaborate the proposal
for the candidacy and another commission was also formed to represent Brazil in Yokohama. They were formed by the following people:
Professor Geraldo Lúcio Tiago Filho, PhD (CERPCH – UNIFEI), Professor Afonso Henriques Moreira Santos, PhD (CERNE – UNIFEI), Professor
Giorgio E. O. Giacaglia, PhD (UNITAU), Professor José Carlos César Amorim, PhD (IME), Professor Demetrio Cornilhos Zachariadis,
PhD (USP) and Engineer Antônio Puzzo (Puzzo Representações) representing ALSTOM.
group and keeping the group in contact with IARH's Executive Committee.
On the 19 , in a meeting of the IARH's Executive Committee of
the section of Hydraulic Machines and System, Professores Afonso
Henriques and Geraldo L Tiago Filho were introduced to the Committee
and were able to present Brazil's candidacy. At that time,
Professor Romeo Resiga, Rumania, which also intended to hold the
th
24 event, kindly withdrew its proposal and accepted to hold the
On the 21 , during the closing ceremony, Professors Afonso H M
Santos and Geraldo Lúcio Tiago Filho formally introduced Brazil as
th
the country that will hold the 24 Symposium on Hydraulic Machinery
and Systems, of the International Association for Hydraulic Research
– IAHR, which was greatly approved by the audience.
It was established that the event will take place in the city of Foz
do Iguaçu, where the famous Iguaçu falls and Itaipú hydroelectric
plant are located. Certainly, this will be a very appropriate set for
the success of the event.
Acknowledgements
The group is grateful to ALSTOM do Brasil, represented by its
CEO Mr. Carlos Alberto C. Almeida, who gave all the support, so
that this mission could be successful, and make the journey of all
the members of the commission possible.
