Não conseguiram, entretanto, transmitirmuito mais além da técnica e das normas impostas e adotadas pelo neoclassicismo.Assim fala Wilson Coutinho sobre Debret em recente trabalho em que trata da relação entreArte/lnstituição: “ Debret é então um homem oco, mas objetivo. Cúmplice do mito daRazão de sua geração bonapartista, ele constrói uma obra que é trabalho da técnica e de umsaber objetivado: o da classificação racional, evidente, que será disposta em séries, àmaneira de uma taxiodermia do século que o educou, o XVIII. “ (1)0 Transplante de Uma Estética OficialDurante todo o século XIX e grande parte do XX, a arte brasileira permaneceu presaa determinados padrões. A partir de meados do século XIX o padrão-modelo será inevitavelmentea pintura acadêmica francesa que sucedeu o neoclassicismo — pintura queusará a representação de forma teatral para criar a ilusão e a tradição como meio de evitarquestionamentos e mudanças. O artista acadêmico estava vinculado a um sistema de arteque. ao mesmo tempo que lhe proporcionava sucesso e meios para progredir, cerceava suaimaginação, fixando regras e impondo um padrão de gosto, favorecendo enfim a implantaçãode uma estética oficial.Além dos salões oficiais, era quase nula a atividade artística no Brasil. Os pintoresque ganhavam prêmios de viagem eram enviados a Paris ou a Roma para se aperfeiçoaremcom os artistas consagrados pelas instituições oficiais, os chamados “ pompiers“ . W.A.Bouguereau. J.L. Gérôme, E.J.H. Vernet, L. Cogniet, A. Cabanel, T. Couture, J.L.E.Meissonier estavam entre aqueles que recebiam o reconhecimento oficial. Esse reconhecimento.contudo, não coincide com os artistas hoje considerados os grandes mestresdo século XIX.Os bolsistas da Academia Imperial de Belas Artes seguiam para os ateliês de algunsdesses pintores com instruções rígidas e especificas que limitavam e empobreciam acriação artística: copiavam seus mestres mesmo quando se inspiravam em temas nacionais.Os principais temas explorados pela pintura oficial francesa eram os episódios da históriaclássica e da mitologia, os fatos da história nacional com fundo moral ou episódiosgloriosos, assuntos nobres e religiosos, retratos e, por fim. paisagens e natureza -morta.Com o declínio do neoclassicismo e o surgimento do realismo outros temas passaram a incorporara iconografia acadêmica: o estilo anedótico, temas da vida moderna, costumesreligiosos e o orientalismo, de preferência contendo verdades e qualidades eternas. Areação ao realismo social de Coubert é marcante da parte oficial e do público. Os pintoresâcadêmicos vão utilizar essa temática apelando, porém, para os subterfúgios da metáfora edo simbolismo, diferentemente do verdadeiro realismo proposto por Coubert, que nãoidealizou nem tirou a pintura de um mundo em processo de transformação. Aliás, o orientalismosurgirá como espécie de saída honrosa para com o problema da manutenção dotradicionalismo.
