THE MAGNIFICENCE
OF AYUTTHAYA
The year 1350 marked the emergence of a new power - the
Ayutthaya kingdom.
From the 14th to 18th century, Ayutthaya flourished in
international trade and diplomatic relations.
The dramatic rise of Ayutthaya meant it also grew to
include vassal states in the Malaysian peninsula as well as
Myanmar and Cambodia.
Ayutthaya’s art and architecture were influenced by
neighboring empires such as Sukhothai and Angkor as well
as those farther away, like China, Japan, Persia, and several
European powers.
The name of the city also illustrates Hindu influences,
thanks to its association with the ancient Hindu epic “The
Ramayana”.
Over a 400-year timespan, several canals were dug to
create interconnected waterways that spanned the north
and south areas. The ‘island’ of Ayutthaya once perched on
reclaimed land, about 3.5 meters above sea level, crisscrossed
by roads, canals and moats.
The city’s position was strategic; it was surrounded
by three rivers: the Chao Phraya, the Lopburi and the Pa
Sak. This made Ayutthaya’s Pom Phet Citadel its strongest
defensive stronghold and the last fortress remaining.
Several contemporary maps were drawn by foreign
advisors assigned to the royal court. One of the best was
drawn by Johannes Vingboons, a Dutch cartographer, who
published the map in his atlas around 1665, during the
reign of King Narai.
The Ayutthaya Study Tour is a new travel program
