On this train, I made a bunch of friends, whom I believe
I would have never found even if I spent years and years
wandering around the city.
During the final part of the trip, the train passed by Hai Van
pass, which is widely known as “De nhat hung quan” meaning
the most colossal frontier post where the clouds hang over the
slopes. At that moment, the window appeared like a massive
screen showing a documentary about the serenity of nature;
often this “screen” would flicker black as the train passed
through a tunnel. Through the window I saw the sea, the
open country and the mountainside covered in white flowers.
Sunshine spread out across the side of the pass, illuminating
the emerald slopes.
A 6-day/night trip was not an incredibly long journey for
exploring the country, yet, it was long enough for me to miss
the moments of laying down on the train listening to the sound
of a night rain, the moment pale-yellow rays tried their best to
get through the window and it was enough for me to get used
to the squeaks and whistles every time the train approached
a station.
