TRAVEL BLOGGER LAMTOM: SKIING ON THE TOP OF EUROPE
My fantastic trip to Switzerland started with an adventure in the Alps
mountain range. The map of the mountains shows the trail from
Schynige Platte leading to other higher mountainous areas such as
Grindelwald, First, Kleine Scheidegg, Eiger, Mönch, and last but not
least, Jungfrau – the top of Europe and a source of great pride for
Switzerland. There are multiple levels for climbers, from easy for amateurs, to hard
for professional.
I began to get acclimated to the altitude, the freezing wind, and most importantly, the
signs reading “climbers only.” At the beginning of each mountain road are the signs
that state their length, time of implementation and symbols. Climbers opt for paths
that are suitable for their ability, health, time and supportive equipment that they
have brought along.
The Schynige Platte is well-known for its flora of more than 600 different species of
plants native to both Switzerland and the Alps. The Schynige Platte is an ideal spot
to admire the panoramic vista of Jungfrau (4,158 m), Mönch (4,107 m) and Eiger
(3,970 m).
It takes about 5 hours and 20 minutes to transfer from the Schynige Platte to the top of
First, passing an immense area of grass and flowers, which looks right out of a fairytale
highlighting the snowy Jungfrau mountain tucked into the horizon. Of the 23 mountain
routes in the Grindelwald – First region, there is one route for professional climbers
(First Schwarzhorn Via Ferrata) and 16 other medium difficulty options. The peak of
First also marked the end of the day on the mountain; we returned to Interlaken and
prepared for a “bigger” day: exploring the path to the legendary Jungfrau.
As the road reaches higher altitudes, the green plants are replaced by chilly grey
cliffs and ice-melt streams that look like wisps of hair coming off the mountain.
For skiers, the Jungfrau is a “heaven” that satisfies their passion for skiing, even in
summer. As the journey to the top of the mountain came to a halt, I took a moment
to admire the breathtaking landscape of snowcapped mountains, to listen to the
stories of the legendary climbers Hieronymus Meyer, Johann Rudolf Meyer, Alois
Volken, and Joseph Bortis who conquered the top of the Jungfrau on August 3 rd ,
1811. More significantly, I was told about the cogwheel railway to Jungfraujoch
created by Adolf Guyer-Zeller in 1893, which witnesses an average of 5,000 visitors
a day and earns more than 1 million USD in transportation costs for the Swiss
railway and tourism industries. Stand on the top that looks out in every direction,
close your eyes, listen to the sound of the snowy winds, feel the extreme cold
whipping at your skin, then open your eyes and embrace the freedom like a bird
flying in the blue sky. Don’t you feel amazing?
