emember laughing as I saw the money box in the
bathroom with the words “Pleasure time” on it. If
that was really that “pleasant,” 500 Kr (4 euros) for 5
minutes could be considered as pretty cheap.
The Icelandic highlands are still freezing even in
summer. Temperatures rarely reach 10°C during
the daytime and are close to 0°C as night falls.
Following wind and streams, the humid cold in
Landmannalaugar cut through the layers of clothing
and froze me to the core. After we finished putting
up the tent, we cooked on a tiny gas stove with
two fingers and sat next to each other shaking
simultaneously. Just some leftover pieces of candles
and a flickering green gas fire were not enough to
warm up our gradually freezing hands.
That night it rained. I could clearly feel a thin stream
of water beginning to flow beneath our tent; every few
hours, I tried to poke my head out to check if my tent
was floating down stream. Luckily, both the tent and
us remained in place the next morning. The sun rose
in the blue sky; Mother Nature really knows how to
please us humans!
