My expectations for our mission trip to Cambodia
were so different from what I actually experienced
during the trip.
During the trip, so much was going on that it was
hard to take a moment to reflect and appreciate
what God had been doing for us. At first, God’s
blessings seemed humble. But he showered us with
so many, that what seemed small actually to be an
outstanding tower of blessings in retrospect.
First of all, Cambodia is known for its hot and
humid air. However, the whole time my team
was there, no one seemed phased by the weather.
Interestingly there were nights when cold breezes
would come in and out of New Hope School to
the point where some students complained that it
would be cold. Personally, I have eczema, which
causes rashes and sensitive, itchy skin when it is hot
and humid. But when I returned home to family and
friends, they said that my face was actually brighter,
dewier, and overall looked better. The entire trip, we
ate, slept, and bathed so well. But most importantly, the
community that we built among our teammates was
the most rewarding blessing that God had given us.
Something personal that God gave me was my
realization that I needed to ask Him for humbleness.
I was getting too distracted by what I was doing at
one point, that I started doing the mission work for
my glory and praise, when everything should have
been for God and for God’s people. One morning,
when our team was doing QT, there was a question
asked to all of our teammates, and it was, “Will you
be able to give up everything that you have right now
and follow God completely?” And at that moment,
I realized, “No. In fact, I can confidently say I am
NOT able to give up everything that I have right
now, just to follow God. I have too much that I want
to prioritize and am too scared to lose right now."
Then, this led to me thinking, “Why not? Why can’t
I abandon everything for God?” The answer to
those questions was because humility was something
I didn’t seem to have at the moment. And that
broke me- completely. To be frank, I thought that
humbleness was something that I already had. I mean,
following God inherently makes you a humble person
right? Wrong. This way of thinking was immature
and short sighted. I also thought humbleness simply
meant not bragging when I had achieved something.
But no, humility in God’s eyes meant bringing myself
to His feet, and acknowledging that everything that
I have is in fact not mine, but His and only His. God
is the greatest, and there is nothing we should feel in
lack of when we are with Him. So yes, it should be
easy to follow Him because He will provide no matter
what. God is good all the time, therefore, I shouldn’t
ever be scared.
Dr. Sarah Oh mentioned to us that the worldly idol
that we have is self, and I can not agree any better.
This is the truth. Even though the statement we say
all the time is, “I’m doing this for God,” truthfully
speaking, it’s for our own good too, like for our pride
and reputation. I just find that this is something that
we all need to improve on. Until that day when I
can say confidently, “Yes! I can give up everything
and follow God,” I just want to continue praying for
humility and serving God however wide the range isfrom
week long Cambodia medical mission trips to
3+ year long mission trips. We
just lay our lives down at His
feet, and ask Him to use us in
whatever ways He has in plan
for us.
