Colorado Housing
and Design Trends

Anytime you think of Colorado,
the first thing that will pop into
your head is of course beautiful
mountains and the view of the
front range from the city. When
it comes to housing and design,
you would think Colorado is full of
rustic mountain houses with lots
of texture, wood and stone around
the exterior and interior of the
house (picture 1/ 2/ 3).
That is still true to this day - a lot
of people love to preserve the look
that comes with the surrounding
of this state. (picture 4) This picture
above completely represents
your true mountain rustic architecture,
with heavy rock, plenty
of stained cedar siding with those
beautiful large heavy timbers creating
fun interesting detail at the
peak of the roof.
However, as our world becomes
a lot smaller and we are able to
follow other trends via social media,
TV, magazines and etc., you
will notice a huge turn towards
the simplicity and clean design
- where it is also known as ultra
modern. The design idea is for
a less clutter home where you
can feel serene in a clean space
with clean lines and without too
many colors in a room. A lot of the
inspiration comes from Europe
and as matter of fact Poland as
well. Many of my clients, who are
empty nesters, are leaving that
typical American dream home
where they have raised their kids
surrounded by brick, warmth of
the cabinets with raised panels or
shaker style, where you might find
shiplap in their mud room (which
to this day it is still very popular
in farmhouse design) (picture 5).
These homeowners are trading
out all these textures and colors,
looking for more cleaner, smoother
designs where they can enjoy
their clean new home. You will
notice a lot of new construction
coming in with slanted flat roofs,
smaller rocks with less texture
and no mortar in between with
clean smooth stucco and floor
to ceiling windows (picture 6
and 7).
Even though you will find a lot
of clean designs, the warmth of
wood is always incorporated with
any of these houses to add that
environmental piece to cold cool
colors and sharp corners. For the
interior of the house, it is very
popular to find clean flat panel
cabinets. The symmetry with this
design is very important as you do
not have a lot going on the cabinet
doors to distract your eye from
any imperfections. However, they
are coming out with a lot of fun,
different designs for the cabinet
doors that allows you to choose
from a huge collection. The most
popular ones that have come out
are shiny cabinets, or with a lot of
textures and wood designs for the
flat panel doors. (Picture 8) In the
above picture, you will find acrylic
shindy doors with melamine
wood grain doors on the island,
refrigerator and upper cabinets.
(Picture 9) In this case in the
picture above, entire first floor
was tiled, and the kitchen designed
in matte white acrylic cabinets,
but warmth came in with
the panels on the ceiling, shelves
and bookshelf in the kitchen. This
kitchen designed by Kevin Vesel,
comes all the way from Germany
and the handles that you see on
the panels by the bookshelf are
from Poland.
Along with flat panel cabinets,
clean flat surfaces are popular
as well on fireplace surrounds as
well as clean tile all throughout
the bathroom and kitchen splashes.

you will find three different fireplace
designs, incorporating walnut
panels, large tile or gypsum
precast to give you that concrete
look. Splash of gold is also still
very popular to this day:
And believe it or not, wallpaper
has found a comeback. The selection
of wallpaper right now is
just unbelievable - gorgeous fun
patterns, geometric and modern
floral ads a fun splash of accent
to any room (picture 13). Also,
we cannot forget about splash of
sparkle that each wallpaper has
(picture 14).
So, in conclusion, I am happy to
share some of the new trends that
you will see in Colorado coming
out to be very popular in 2020
and expecting to see this continue
until 2021. There are still a lot of
other designs that are still very
popular and have their own charm
and hopefully I will be able to tell
you about them in my next article.
