ABSTRACT
This essay is an analysis of the geopolitical power game in the Arctic region between
Arctic 5: United States, Russia, Canada, Norway and Denmark. The aim is to answer
following question:
Which security-policy challenges does Denmark face in the Arctic?
Through Barry Buzan’s 5 security policy sectors (Political, Military, Economic, Societal,
and Environmental) the essay analyses the regional implications of the race for territory
towards the North Pole in order to secure the expected findings of natural resources and
enhanced possibilities of using northern routes. The region is looked at with geopolitical
glasses and the essay finds that Denmark is in the middle with the role of a mediator. The
United States and Russia, being the big political, military and economic powers in the
region, have a lot at stake. This is why Denmark very carefully should take the lead in
enhancing cooperation and dialog to improve mutual understanding.
This work has already commenced with the Ilulissat-meeting, where Denmark with great
success established a forum for cooperation.
The basic theory on international politics that is used for this essay is neo-realism.
